Orange handle slabs a life saver?

I'm a fan of color, bright and shiny is great for dusk/night, heck even a cloudy day.

My father-in-law told my wife and her brother to always buy brightly colored tools because they are easier to see/find. I have a couple yellow handles (Spyderco Salt series) and orange handles (Spyderco Military and Assist) which I love, but I'm not sure color is a huge impact for me. I am also to some degree color blind so it lessens the benefit.

I'm a fan of blaze orange, both for easily locating dropped knives, and I think it makes knives a little more friendly looking for non-knife people.

I like bright handles, but I also like a small lanyard with reflective cord in it. That can be a real godsend on all kinds of gear when it's dark. I've been looking for a good source that sells both reflective and glow in the dark paracord, so I can make up a bunch of lanyards.

The bright colored scales and Lanyards may not be life savers but they can sure be knife savers.

Yes, Orange is great. I have the Orange G10 rc4 and I will continute to get more orange knives. I often gut deer in the dark or in leaves and put down the knife and sheath and I can find it easily. It is also easy to spot in the tent, on the camp table, in the back pack etc. It really is a great advantage in my opinion. I wish my sheath was orange too. I'm getting the Military orange g10 or orange benchmade griptilian. Blue is pretty good in natural settings but not as bright. Don't get camo gear unless it is going to be worn so that it is seen. Ever drop a camo, hat, glove, flashlight, radio, and try to find it? We just lost a camo radio that we knew was close by. If it was orange I'm sure we could have seen it.

I add a cord or tape if I need it. Sometimes spray paint. Looks like hell but it works for dedicated tools. I don't like bright handles because it is easier to make something bright than it is to subdue it. I can't buy every knife I like.

Teal, if I remember correctly, was shown in studies to be more visible than orange or yellow at a distance at sea. The human eye is most sensitive in the green wavelength, hence the debate over green vs. red for night vision protection. Wavelength vs. intensity, pick one.

No, never

If I put my knife down, I have always known exactly where I put it down and I have never moved off without collecting it first.

IMO, absentmindeness has no place in the wild :D

Kind regards
Mick

I think your standard might be slightly..........unrealistic.

Unless you have a reason to hide from humans, such as in combat, I think anything that adds color to your gear and outfit is great for adventures in the wild. Helps you see your gear in low light, and helps you be seen by hunters. And there's nothing worse than needing to be rescued, and you're hard to see because of all the camo you're wearing.

I have lots of orange handled knives and I never seem to loose them. I have dropped a camo OHT and had a very long search to find it (it was day light but I did not know where or when it came out of my horizontal sheath). I did find it but after I found it I realized that an orange handled knife would have been seen almost immediately.

i got this today! Im sure if i dropped it i would have no problem finding it...but i think it just looks sweet!:D

I don't think so :D

Here's just a couple of examples of why I insist on such high standards for myself & my children.

When you spend time in the bush that has snakes whose bite can kill you inside of 10 minutes, just because you forgot to look the other side of the log before you've stepped over it, you very soon learn that absentmindeness has a real short shelf life over here

When you have spiders whose bite can kill you in about 1/2 hour just because you didn't roll the branch before you picked it up, you very soon learn that absentmindeness has a real short shelf life over here

If I only ever ventured a couple of hundred meters from my car, or only ventured into areas that had mobile phone coverage, then a compression bandage may buy me enough time to get to a hospital for antivenom or call an ambulance to me. I can assure you that neither is typically the case.

So in my personal circumstances, I repeat, absentmindness has no place in the wild

Bear in mind as always, others milage may vary :D

Kind regards
Mick

All good points, Mick!

Glad those things don't apply here.

I like orange handles. In Fact I started a thread on spyderco forum here that convinced them to make the Assist rescue model in orange.

I understand being carful with knives and keeping track of them, but bad things happen especially in emergency situation, being able to recover a dropped tool may save your life.

I'm not necessarily talking absentmindedness. Sometime things happen. I might suppose that especially in the type of areas your talking about, any edge could help. Say perhaps its dark and in the low light you need to get to your knife, or someone else does. Bright colors although I admit not always as aesthetically pleasing can help even the sharpest minded people. Spiders and snakes!!! Oh my!! I would love to come and see that.... with a guide that is.

Orange is for food, nothing more...if I have to put something on my knife not to lose it chances are I won't care enough to hang onto it. If I put something down so valuable that my life could end because of its loss, believe it will be strapped to me in some fashion.

G'day Summerman

As my fixed blade resides in its dangler sheath on my left hip, its easy enough to find, as is my folder which is in its pouch threaded on a thong around my neck and nestled in my front jacket pocket

If you ever make it over to OZ, I'd be happy to act as guide & introduce you to some of our snakes, and if we get lucky you'll even get to see some funnell web spiders as well :D

Kind regards
Mick
