Am I wrong to think that blaze-orange knives are a relatively new phenomenon? Like, that they’ve become really popular in the last year or two?

When I first started seeing them, I thought it would be a short-lived fad for sure. It’s now clear that I woefully misjudged the market. Orange knives seem to be here to stay.

I guess I understand the appeal to hunters, but I don’t get why anyone else would want one.

Am I completely alone on this? Anyone else a little baffled by the popularity of orange knives?

I like them because I get enormously tired of black, brown and OD green knives. Orange was one of the first colors to get added to the mix and I'm glad to see the available pallette expand.
I get that. I would like to see a lot more blue knives. I also realized after posting my message that I have a thing for purple knives, so maybe I shouldn’t look down my nose at orange ones.

I’m not a fan either. I prefer pretty plain knives when it comes to colors or any other kind of flare. I have 2 Sebbie inlays and my pm 1&2 are camo. Everything else is black or ti. It doesn’t bother me though unless there was a knife I really wanted but it only came in orange. Thankfully that hasn’t happened yet.

Orange Handled Knives have been in use for Survival Gear in The Navy since the 1960's in my experience. Others may be able to provide OJT prior to the 1960's. Orange is much easier to spot upon the open ocean since it isn't a natural color in the environment. Now purple may be more contrasting within the autumn leaf floor of a deciduous Forrest?

Years ago, say 2008-2012ish, I had a few custom outdoors knives made with orange G10 handles for visibility purposes. Eventually I moved on from full orange G10 handles to using orange liners and some other color over it (blue works very well to my eye) for a little more visually pleasing handle overall.

Here's one I had made a couple years ago. 1/8" orange G10 "liners" with dark blue burlap micarta on top.

That’s hot! The orange works great with the blue. I also think blue and bright yellow look good.

Orange has been around for a while, although during the 80's-early 2000's it was mainly reserved for the rescue, dive, and hunting/fishing crowds. Interesting thing, as it seems to have slowly overtaken yellow as the "go to" color in those markets.

I really like it as a secondary color, especially with greens. By itself, it depends on the pattern. I'm glade for all the color options we have now.

For hunting, they aren't anything new at all. For trendy Insta bling, maybe.

Orange handled knives I have: 2 Enduras, 2 Brutalica Tsaraps, 3DogKnives, Izula, Junglas, SRK

The reason I like orange is being in the woods a lot and it is much easier to see them set down in low light, vegetation, or when dropped in snow. Most other blades I have for outdoors wear lanyards or fobs with orange or neon.

Looks wise I prefer a beautiful wood or green micarta. Some of the blue and purple scales I see on here look fantastic, and the only time I see that in nature up here is flowers so it might be a nice option too.

I just got this one as a gift for a good friend who is a TowBoat U.S. captain. After looking at it I really want an orange 'something' so I don't have to spend an hour looking for another knife I've dropped outside mowing the lawn!
