Trim off the third of that guard closest to the point, reverse the curve of the grip, wrap it in leather and call it a very pretty machete. It's got the right blade shape. Very kopis-like. 36" might be a bit much for a cleaver though...
At 36" you can take out part of the belly or have the spine follow the curve of the belly and it becomes a good heavy vegetation cutter and a serious weapon.
