I played for UNC 1972 and 1973, first, third and left field. I started USSSA softball in 1975, and played up until 1989, left field (in softball the pitcher is always ahead of the batter, so the field shifts heavily to the right. I still had a decent set of wheels then.) and first base.

Those were the good old days, when after hours of ball, I didn't worry about my body. Now a bag of frozen peas is heaven to me.

We're not getting on the heigth subject again. My principal is 6'7". At lunch, my friends make me go up to him and stand there. They laugh.

UNC? University of North Carolina?

You'd probably feel worse if you caught. Catcher is my favorite position. I absolutely love it! One downside is when the pitcher shakes you off two times in an at-bat and the pitch he wants to throw gets hit.

Or, when there's a play at the plate and the runner is ginormous, at least compared to me. Thankfully, we're required to slide if there's anything remotely close to a play.

Is NC your current location?

Nope. VA is my home, but NC is where I was born and raised.

I caught a few games in FPS. Even less gear than in college ball, so the hits hurt, no matter the runner's size. The thing that killed me catching was digging out the grounder to short or third with no one on to back up the throw. That gets brutal on the knees. Fortunately, my ortho doc says I get new knees in the next few years!

Slide? LMAO! You do everything legal (and sometimes a little illegal) to knock the ball lose.

I mean't I was lucky that guy was required to slide or I would've gotten run over, which isn't really bad, because I still would've held on. I don't do the little baby "guarding" the plate where the cathers are now standing in front of the plate to be safe. I block that thing with my life.
