So my amazon.com-fu is pretty bad and I hit the buy button whilst looking at an Opinel 8 carbon with beechwood handle...

Good knife?

So far I know they are cheap.

:o

I've been told Opinels are like SAKs. Not the best knife, but one every knife fan should own.

I love my opinel. It's a great farmer knife, abuse the crud out of it. The carbon steel takes a phenomenal edge. Much more so than your typical spydie (which are damn sharp too)

If knives were priced according to their cutting ability, Opinels would cost $80.

I'm confident you'll get your $8 worth. :D

Very nice knives and you get way more than what you payed ! Easy to sharpen and easy to add little personal touches. You wont regret it. This is my no.7

I've picked up several Opinels ranging from No. 7 to 12. The full flat ground thin blade makes for an excellent slicer. I keep some stashed around in strategic places (work bag, car, office) to use as my "clean" knives (for food), so I don't have to suffer plastic or restaurant cutlery.

I own 8's, 9's, 10 and have a 12 in the mail. It's hard to really say what my favorite folding knife is...but its probably an Opinel.

Not a good knife. A GREAT knife. :D :D :D Learn the coup de savoyard early, wipe the blade with the corner of your shirt or a handkerchief after every use, and you'll never have a problem with an Opinel.

You won't be sorry they are fantastic. I have a 8 that I just can't seem to leave at home even if I have 2 other knives on me

You can easily remove some of the wooden handle to make it a one hand opener. Good knives - cheap price.

Funny how the finger that controls the buy button tends to act of its own accord from time to time (a phenomenon with which I'm quite familiar). :D

Opis are awesome, and I'm especially fond of the carbon versions. I don't really see a diff. in edge holding or sharpenability between the carbon and inox, but I love the patina I can get on the carbon. This will likely be the first of many for you, once you see how well they slice and how much fun they are to customize.

Haha yeah I just wish I had put a Mora in the basket along with the Opi. ;)

I've been wanting one for many years. I'm not sure why I've never bought one before. Probably a combination of laziness and hoping I'd find one in a store.

Slicers are my favorite, along with carbon. I've made a handful of my own knives and I'm sure I'll end up customizing this one. Because of this I'm sure I'll need at least one more.

I'm not sure if I'll force patina it, blue it, or simply let it find its own way.

Whatever happens I'm sure I'll be pleased with it given the price. I could see someone who doesn't know knives mistaking it for a much more expensive gentlemans folder.

It's better than the other things you could have bought. Who knows, you might love it and get a few more.

Let develop its own fingerprint. It'll happen pretty quick. Just cut up some veggies for lunch a few times and don't rinse the blade--just wipe it. :)

Probably be the best bang for the buck you have ever spent!

I don't know why, they are just fun. I only own one. I need to get a few more.

I want to get a No. 13 just to see people's reactions. I'm guessing the reaction in real life is disbelief mixed with humor. It's hard to take that knife seriously, but I actually bet it would make a great knife in the kitchen. You can just fold it up and set it on the counter, no worrying about knife blocks or edge guards.
