Any advice on which package 8 or 10?
Which motor?
Which wheels and attachments?

I want a variable speed. I will be doing fixblades till I get better
Any advice at all would be appreciated. Thanks

Whichever one you purchase, get enough motor to run it. I run a KMG as my primary grinder and will be stepping up to a 3 hp when the money is available.

Its a fine machine, enjoy, Fred

I was very lucky to have come into a little money a while back so I took advantage of the situation and ordered what I wanted rather than just getting a basic setup.

I got the 10" setup with the 2 Horse motor & variable speed controller. In addition to the supplied flat platen, I also got the small wheel attachment with 3 sizes (.5" .75" and 1.125" i think), the rotary platen (my favorite attachment!), enough tooling arms so that I have one for each attachment. I also got the base plate to make setup a breeze. The last thing I got was a tool tree so that I could keep things out of the way. I think that should keep me going a while. I'm very happy with my setup.

Rob was very helpful when I was trying to decide what to get. Give him a call and he'll set you on the right path.

Good luck!

Oh! One more thing. I live in a pretty humid climate so I try to combat rust any way I can. I took the time to paint what I could before setup to keep things from rusting.

That's my $.02

I would say go with the 2hp and spend the extra sheckels for the variable speed option. I have a 1 1/2 hp VS and it is fantastic, but I wish I had bought to 2 hp motor.

I got the ten and now want the 8" for what that is worth.

But, I make mostly folders.

On other additions. I really like the tool rack. Really comes in handy to have that feature, and I also got the base mounting plate and variable speed using the pully set up. I prefer that now that I've used it and it does not bog down on me at all using it at any of the speeds.

I recommend the small wheel attatchment and a 1/2" and a 1" wheel for the arm and find these come in really handy for getting things done that I used to have to use a dremmel for. I've also found you can avoid needing the slack belt attatchment by taking the flat platten out of that arm and make it do both.

I also bought Mike Kanter's MAP working platform and find it to be a very well built quality addition that is worth every penny if you want the best multi positioning table you can find anywhere. It is commensurate with the stoutness of the KMG. Mike outdid himself on it. IMO.

Unless you're into small knives (eg. small folders), get the 10". You can make a lot more with it.

I just got the 8" with a 1.5 hp motor, small wheel attachment and the variable platen. The metal plate made set up a breeze. In the future I will get a 'tree" for all the accessory arms. So far I love this machine and it can do alot more than I can. If you have any questions, Call Rob and he will give you good advice. Kevin

anyone like the MAP arm?

I like it a lot.:D

There is another thread that has alot more info and opinions about the MAP Arm. do a search for dream KMG.
Thanks

As far as wheels go, get the 12" if you cant afford the 14". Get the 10" if you cant afford the 12". Get an 8" if you cant afford the 10"
If your doing smaller folders, a 10" will work fine, SR Johnson uses a 5" wheel to grind his subhilt fighters so use what your comfortable with.

Sorry I didnt see that STR. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.
Im plan on ordering the KMG and MAP arm in about a month.
Thanks for all the help,
