hello, i have been doing mainly stock removal. i tried some forging with some rebar but thats it. I want to buy some steel i can forge. Can someone please explain to me what kind of forms the steel comes in. I know 1 form would be round bar. you get a piece of round bar abd hammer it down into something resemblind a knife. what other forms can the steel come in--and whats involved in preparing that steel to be grounded--cutting-etc..I thought i heard some one buying sheets? how would you prepare sheets. Im just looking to get some steel to start practicing forging-what would you reccomend?--thanks mark--on a side note-i read in a knife book that most makers who make high end knives dont consider wood to be high end. If wood was taken out of the picture what materials would be considered " high end". im thinking -mamoth ivory.mother of pearl, maybe some horn, how about stag---thanks marekz

You can get flat bar, 01, 10xx, 5160, etc etc 1/4" x 1 is a good starting point for most user knives 1/4" x 1.5 for the bigger ones. W series is a real hard find in flat stock. I stick to 5/8" - 1" W1 round mostly. It's cheap and not hard to work down.

Aside from round, steel can come in pretty much any 6 sided shape of any dimensions. :)

Most of the forging stock though, would be either 3/16" or 1/4" thick and from 1" to 1.5" wide and comes in bars from 12" up to 10' but is usually cut down for shipping unless you are getting a ton of it shipped FOB.

Here's a video I did on forging a blade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2qAjQYqvsQ

I'm not much for talking in my vids but I did put in some text. to say what I'm doing.
