ORDERS ARE CLOSED! 2023 BladeForums.com Traditional Knife.

Someone will correct me if this is wrong, my understanding is the hump, needed for spring tension/strength, is on the exterior to clear space in the well for the blade.
Other than for the pen blade (which is usually too small to be of much concern), it will be difficult to take up too much well space for a sheepsfoot main.

But I can see it could have been designed this way for a different blade profile, i.e. spear, clip, etc.

At all the beautiful pictures.

So far it seems the only sure tell that the steel is stainless is the stamping for Cyclops Steel Works. GECs even with acorn shields have been 1095 in fixed blades.
Exactly..... And just a little history for those who might not know: .... GEC sits in an industrial park in Titusville..... The majority of that area once housed a specialty stainless steel manufacturer called Universal Stainless which is headquartered in Bridgeville, Pa..... The Titusville operation is called Universal Cyclops.... The GEC factory is in a building that was used by Universal Cyclops as a skunkworks, metallurgical facility.... The building was vacated by Cyclops and eventually taken over by GEC as their factory...

So, Cyclops tang stamps refer to stainless steel that was, and still is, made in Titusville...

Thanks for posting this. For someone who does not reside in USA, great piece of history.

Which company makes that steel there currently? Not GEC themselves, I assume?

Universal Stainless is still operating and the Titusville plant is still located across the street from GEC, you can go to their website and see what they manufacture at each location if you want to check it out. GEC makes knives, they don’t have the capability or space to make their own steel.

While a reliable indicator, even that is not 100%. The 420HC 89s from 2021 say "Great Eastern Cutlery" on the front and the pattern number and Titusville on the back. You can kind of make out the GEC stamp on the chestnut one in this photo; I am away from home, otherwise, I could take a better shot. I also think the 420HC keychain knits were similar. I am not sure if there are other exceptions.

thats right, for any one whose camped out for rendezvous, you can literally see them at work at the early hours welding or working on projects before it gets too hot to do that sort of work.

I noticed that our 2023 BF knives are stamped Great Eastern Cutlery but are 1095 steel. Is this usual? I was thinking that that stamping was for stainless steel. I must have dozed off in class.
Not unusual, in fact, GEC relies heavily on 1095 high carbon steel, which, of course, is not stainless

I'm not an acrylic kinda dude .. but these are very good looking. Love the red one.

I really like that "unicorn ivory" and it's been hard to restrain myself from getting one. I keep saying "the BF knife is coming, I don't need two". Lol!
