OK Guys,
So I am heading to Oregon for a few wilderness classes, which I am very excited about.
After quite a bit of research, I decided to train with Oregon Firearms Academy. It is 2,500 miles from home, so you know I am dedicated to this one.
They represent the highest quality "real world" training I could find.
I am excited about the wilderness courses, but most interested in the defensive handgun course. While I have been shooting and hunting for over 30 years, the defensive aspects of firearms training are new. And the more I look at it, the more critical I think they are.
Most of us train making snares, figure 4 traps, making bowdrill fires and the other outdoor skills needed for survival, but are severely lacking in the defensive aspects of survival. These guys are the real deal. Their instructors have tons of real life experience in both defensive firearms training and wilderness and urban survival.
If push came to shove, DO YOU HAVE THE SKILLS NEEDED TO DEFEND YOURSELF? I am going to have a lot more skill in September.
Seriously, that would have to be the worst feeling, you make it out of the initial situation, you have a well stocked BOB, and some scumbag takes it just because you lack the skill to defend yourself. Not to mention you are probably going to be dead as a result.
I will be taking my Benchmade 705, Air Force Pilots Survival knife and Woodmans Pal (As a test. I should probably take a hunters length axe) and a SOG Paratool. These guys are big fans of Moras, so I will probably use one of those also.
My BOB includes a Suunto MC2 compass, Lowrance GO2 GPS, Surefire G2 with a Cree LED drop in, Gerber Infinity LED as backup, K&M Matchsafe, Firesteel, Berkey water bottle with water purification cartridge and a Nalgene 1.5 liter to hold water as refill. First aid kit, and a laundry list of other "stuff".
If anybody has a blade they want me to test, I will happily drop the Air Force Pilots Survival Knife and test your blade, then send it back after the course.
Feel free to critique my kit.
My sidearm will be a Wilson Combat in .45
The defensive handgun course includes firing several hundred rounds of ammo in a variety of situations and includes a full tilt critique based on a law enforcement qualification.

I am heading out on 9/19.
