OK Guys,

So I am heading to Oregon for a few wilderness classes, which I am very excited about.

After quite a bit of research, I decided to train with Oregon Firearms Academy. It is 2,500 miles from home, so you know I am dedicated to this one.

They represent the highest quality "real world" training I could find.

I am excited about the wilderness courses, but most interested in the defensive handgun course. While I have been shooting and hunting for over 30 years, the defensive aspects of firearms training are new. And the more I look at it, the more critical I think they are.

Most of us train making snares, figure 4 traps, making bowdrill fires and the other outdoor skills needed for survival, but are severely lacking in the defensive aspects of survival. These guys are the real deal. Their instructors have tons of real life experience in both defensive firearms training and wilderness and urban survival.

If push came to shove, DO YOU HAVE THE SKILLS NEEDED TO DEFEND YOURSELF? I am going to have a lot more skill in September.

Seriously, that would have to be the worst feeling, you make it out of the initial situation, you have a well stocked BOB, and some scumbag takes it just because you lack the skill to defend yourself. Not to mention you are probably going to be dead as a result.

I will be taking my Benchmade 705, Air Force Pilots Survival knife and Woodmans Pal (As a test. I should probably take a hunters length axe) and a SOG Paratool. These guys are big fans of Moras, so I will probably use one of those also.

My BOB includes a Suunto MC2 compass, Lowrance GO2 GPS, Surefire G2 with a Cree LED drop in, Gerber Infinity LED as backup, K&M Matchsafe, Firesteel, Berkey water bottle with water purification cartridge and a Nalgene 1.5 liter to hold water as refill. First aid kit, and a laundry list of other "stuff".

If anybody has a blade they want me to test, I will happily drop the Air Force Pilots Survival Knife and test your blade, then send it back after the course.

Feel free to critique my kit.

My sidearm will be a Wilson Combat in .45

The defensive handgun course includes firing several hundred rounds of ammo in a variety of situations and includes a full tilt critique based on a law enforcement qualification.

I am heading out on 9/19.

Carl, you are gonna have a helluva good time....good choice of schools.

I know a few of the instructors and students, been there for a informal get together shoot/BBQ and still yack at them once in a while. Instructors are very good people.

You're gonna have a great time.

Get some pics while you're there and tell em Q-ball says hey.

I am surprised more people don't take defensive firearms classes.

I can't wait to get there.

I have taken two, and they are worth every penny. I grew up around firearms, but taking that extra step to really learn the ins and outs of defensive shooting really gives you a new sense of skill and ability. Not to mention handling confidence.

You will have a great time.

I am surprised more people don't take defensive firearms classes.

It's on my short list of things I need to do.

Our new government has already seized control of the banks and auto industry and is working on the health care system... it's only a matter of time before they try for the guns. :barf: Maybe I'll take an offensive firearms class....

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I'm not. Most folks don't want to spend the money on training, preferring to spend it on guns and ammo instead. After all, aren't most men born knowing how to defend themselves?

:p

They THINK they can defend themselves..........until it is too late.

I've got guns, I've got ammo, now to complete the preparedness, I am going to get the knowledge/skills.

Anybody else been to, or interested in going to similar training?

I took a course some years ago by John Farnam. It was amazing how much I didn't know !! If you carry or keep a gun for defense training is absolutely essential ! Unfortunately I can't convince very many about that.

Hey Carl - you'll have a blast.

I've been through quite a few CQC courses using a variety of different firearms focusing on deffensive and offensive techniques. Weapons retention training is a lot fun, IMO. Get as much out of it as you can and ask a lot of questions.

It's an issue. So many people know so little, they have no idea how little they know! :(

very valid points, whenever people ask my "what gun/gear/ammo should I get?" I ask what thier budget is, it's X. Ok so spend 1/3 or less of X on the gun(staying with a quality piece obviously) spend 1/3 on ammo, and the rest on training from a known/respected firearms instructor. People who ask this in Socal get referred to ITTS more often then not

training, knowledge, skillsets, and mindset are vastly more important than your choice of equipment

have fun!

Carl,
Let us know how it goes. I'm seriously considering a course down there ("down" from where I reside), weighing it against the "shooting only " offerings at Front Sight (when I get more feedback about FS). I know from people who attended that the OFA is terrific.

That looks awesome! I hope you have a great time. Would love to do something like that, though don't have the money/time to do it right now.

Is there a link on that site with information on the wilderness course you are taking?

They have a basic wilderness course set up for October 17th. I don't think they have Wilderness 1 and 2 scheduled for the Spring yet, but you could call and ask. You really need to set up a Defensive handgun course in conjunction because these skills are discussed during the wilderness classes I believe.

I think I have a link to an article that was written about Ortegon Firearms Academy by someone who completed the course. I found it when I was first searching them out. If I can find the link, I will post it later.

Carl,
A minature "chocolate-dapple" dachshund, now two years old (he's about 5 weeks in the pic). Runs a pretty lean 17 pounds, a bit too big for a 'true' minature, but just the right size for me. Hangs in real good on long walks and mid-range hikes and an all around terrific little pal. "I'm his person" as my wife says.
