My latest playthings...

Nothing special at all, some quicky playing around. There was a recent post on staining Opinels and I wanted to diddle with that. I also wanted to make one as short as possible retaining a mostly full sized blade. We'll see if that fits the watch pocket.

The longer shinier one was the normal struggle to take stain. Ended up leaving some dried on it and clear coated, I'm sure the clear coat mixed with the stain. We'll use it as a work knife and see how that holds up.

On the shorter one something a bit interesting happened. After staining and all I thought the easy open notch wasn't deep enough so I fixed that and had to take it down to bare wood again. Not feeling like sanding it I glass beaded (like sandblasting) it. It ended up rough as heck of course and I tried staining it like that. It took it like a sponge. Any light spots are from sanding after the clear coat. I'm going to act like I meant for it to look like that.

With my fingernails weak lately I've been using Opinels quite a bit. They really do work well.

Nice work. Another idea to get an Opi to fit in your watch pocket is to get different jeans! ;)

seriously though I can fit a #6, and a Sodbuster Jr in my Levi 505 watchpocket with room to spare.

I'm in!

Here are some that I have tricked up and used a lot for whittlin' - esp the one with the twisted handle.

Do you like whittling with an Opinel? On the one shown you obviously reshaped the blade to a wharncliffe shape. About what size angle do you have on the edge? What tools did you use to modify the blade? I've been trying to do some whittling this summer. I'm not very good, but I think I'm improving, and it sure is fun. And way more of a mental workout than I'd have expected, planning and visualizing little projects, and trying to figure out whether I can fix my mistakes.
