I know I can't be the only one with lots (maybe tons) of gear, from sleeping bags, tents, packs, snowshoes, fishing gear, you get the idea. I was wondering how you guys store and organize all your stuff. I just bought my first house and I have a room, maybe 8' x 12' that I am going to outfit for all my stuff and I was just wondering if anyone wants to share some pics, advise, or opinions. Thanks

:barf:

I also need some ideas... I have crap stashed all over my apartment, and it's a big a** apartment. The girlfriend does not appreciate it :(

I have a caravan ...
all the camping gear goes in there , we take out what we need or the whole dam lot van and all depending on where we are going and how long for .

4 18 gallon, and 1 12 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck totes changed my life.

Well, they made it a lot less cluttered, anyway. Sometimes my house still looks a sporting goods store that got hit by a tornado, but it's no longer a permanent condition.
Dedicated closet for outdoor wear, and a couple sets of plastic drawers for the bottom of the closet helped, too. There's always a couple of backpacks out, but that's it, usually.

I use the very large RubberMaid containers. I store specific items in them, sorted by activity. Tarp/tent accessories, food prep and food, batteries, knives, lanterns, and so on.
The containers are different colors, so I can tell at a glance what is in each one. I mostly car camp these days, and I keep these tubs pre packed and up to date. when I want to go to the woods, I can confidently just toss them in the back of the truck, and know that everything I need will be in the containers.
When I get home, each is unpacked, re sorted if necessary, replenished and re packed for the next trip.

just an aside, but if a time of real crisis were to ever come, I could live for a l......o.........n.......g time out of these containers.

We moved recently and now have a large loft above the garage. The outdoors gear is stored in plastic tubs and cardboard boxes. I'd like to get it all into tubs in case of rodents, etc.

Cheap and cheerful

Stuff sacks of different sizes and colors with tags hanging from then with the list of what is contained

I got my hunting and camping gear in a bunch of 18 gallon totes. I also have another three 55(?) gallon totes for tents, sleeping bags, stoves, and any other big stuff that doesn't fit well in the 18 gallon totes.

When I head out camping I take two of the big totes and fill em up for the trip. Makes packing/unpacking easy. When I setup camp the big totes are used to store food and other stuff and secured with a bungee cord (except in bear country).

The fishing stuff stays in a bunch of Plano 3700 boxes, most of which stay in my big tackle bag. I pull out what I need and put em in the smaller tackle box for trips.

Big Plastic Tubs. You can screw together a simple two or three level shelf with 2 x 4's for under $20 in materials and put it against the wall. Then you have the rest of the room space for gear sorting. Don't forget contents tags taped to each tub. In your 8' wide space, you can easily shelve your tubs 4-wide.

Line the walls with shelves. They don't have to be attached to the walls. Free-standing shelf units will work. Just make sure the shelves are deep enough for whatever gear goes on them.
And make sure they're strong enough to support the weight of your gear. Waking up in the middle of the night to a loud crash is rather disconcerting. Finding out that said crash was the result of a shelf collapsing from the weight of boxes of bullets and other reloading components will make you thankful that you didn't store the powder cans and boxes of primers on the same shelf.

Have less gear and the clutter goes away. ;)
THIS! I've been trying to unload alot of stuff lately to get some extra money but getting rid of knives and packs that I don't use is a very "freeing" type of experience. At first I was like I really like this and need it but after selling it I feel great. I don't need so much stuff in my life. I would like to get my gear down to a core set that has a few variables for different seasons and tasks instead of multiples that never get used. I'm not judging gear hoarders though! I know I am one.
