ORIGINAL critical view of Sebenza (superb folding job is not superb cutting action).

Dave,

I just read over your post for the 4th or 5th time. You always make a lot of sense in what you add to these threads. You are definately correct, these threads bring out a lot of emotion. I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing really, as if there was no passion for knives and the knife world itself, there would be no emotion. That being said, I never meant to criticize or degrade anyone for their choice of cutlery. I simply wanted to state my opionon on the quality-for-price perspective in a price range that includes many fine custom knives. The sebnenza is a very high quality folder, for what it is, and what it is, is a simple production knife with very few options/choices. If i was given one, I wouldn't feel like I was carrying a knife of inferior quality that wouldn't do what I asked of it. Anyways, I appologise if I offended anyone with my comments, or if anyone thought I was attacking them as a person.

BTW, I own a CRK 1 piece fixed blade I got in a trade, and i personally feel it is one hell of a value for a high quality fixed blade. CRK does make outstanding knives, no arguements there. Just for the price range of the sebenza, look around and do your homework (stolen from Les) and buy the best you can afford. Something that will work had, looks good, and holds it's value well.

In short, the Sebenza is not the best knife, folding or otherwise.

It opens in the pocket.

It cannot be flicked w/o voiding the warranty.

It looks like a gray t*rd.

For most EDC actions the blade's too wide.

It's overpriced.

Why do people love it and cry bitterly when it's criticized? It's a status symbol. It can't be status unless it's expensive. But when it's expensive and you buy it, you don't want to look foolish for spending too much money, so the owner gives it magical powers. Very much like the afore mentioned BMW M3. But the funny thing about the Sebenza, it's so common now, it's losing it's status. That's why they invented the almost as ugly decorated ones, or with tanto points or damascus steel.

Remember what Frued said...it's a surrogate p*nis and an expensive one at that. If you criticize a man's Johnson, he'll step up to the plate and bat.

I own a small plain Sebenza.
I would have to say that the Sebenza is an ugly knife. But it has a kind of "industrial" beauty. It is a pure cutting machine.

I would love to see a Seb produced that has no "beautifying" treatment. No polishing , no blue annodizing. Just the materials left "raw". An "Industrial Techno Sebenza"!!
Maybe I should approach Mr Reeve and friends....

It's not as if folks expect a knife to play with their nuts if they pay a high price. I think there are equally expensive knives that folks DONT rave about. THERE IS a distinct difference between the Seb's fit and finish and MOST knives of ANY cost. This isn't rocket science here. Taste the beans.. Dont tell me what they look like. Personally, I think the fancier the knife... the less tasteful it is. But THATS ME!

One look over in the Chris Reeve Forum will tell you. Your CRK is backed by the best HUMANS in the biz... Not just the man, but employees who love their job and do you right. Look in the CRK forum... Their customers bought their main person of contatct a Green Beret Knife (drool). What more needs to be said. The Seb could have scales of balsa and a blade of lead... At least theyd keep it runnin' for ya.... WITH a :)

Gota respond to this!

A few years ago I also thought quite similar thoughts. However specs on paper prove very little and reflect even less. You sir know the PRICE of the Benza but nothing about its VALUE.

Sal of Spyderco said if Spyderc made a similar product using similar materials with similar attention to detail with similar back up the price would be similar. (paraphrasing)

Lets break this down.

"It opens in the pocket."

Happened to me once or twice when I bashed my side into a heater etc and the shuddering knock caused the blade to open about 1.5cm in my pocket. I had a surprise when I reached for the knife, but no harm done. If this happens all the time, the lockbar is not positive enough and simply needs adjusting. Probably as a reasult of general wear and tear. This is NOT a common problem and CRK will sort it out if you do not know what to do. Oh that assumes you actually own one...

"It cannot be flicked w/o voiding the warranty."

Show me a knife maker that says if you have to open the knife like an idiot and with all due risk of the knife flying out of your hand and hurting someone, not the mention frightning people with a display of look everyone I HAVE A KNIFE AND KNOW HOW TO ACT LIKE A CLOWN. Then please show me...:barf: If flicking is your bag, get a Balisong PLEEEAAAASE!
"It looks like a gray t*rd."

Well, the name means 'work' and it is made to be a utility tool with every gramme there because it makes it work better. Job done I think. Plain yes, ugly? Not a chance. Ugly is a Strider folder, and I like those a lot also.

"For most EDC actions the blade's too wide."

Hu? Care to elaborate? I have found both the Large and Small IDEAL for almost every task I can think of.

"It's overpriced"

Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Why do people love it and cry bitterly when it's criticized?

Because its a great knife made by honestly great people and owned by stand up guys and gals that respect each other and share a common interest. "outsiders" who shoot first and ask queestions later are ten a penny and to be honest a bit boreish for us to answer day after day after...

It's a status symbol.

No its a knife that works very very well.

It can't be status unless it's expensive.

Like a Buck 110?

But when it's expensive and you buy it, you don't want to look foolish for spending too much money, so the owner gives it magical powers.

Now I once thought this also, so here we go, on paper and even with a good look, I challenge anyone to see what the fuss is all about. I was not all that impressed the first WEEK of carry. After that period, my fuzzy brain begain to notice the little things that add up to the Benza. I bought the benza and went on to own a Mnandi and Damascus small wood. I don't have a lot of cash and would not have hesitated to say so if I disliked this or any other company or product. So impartially it is great and you are talking rubbish!

 ;) :p LOL! No hard feelings eh? Just kidding. Its a knife and a darn good one, Thats it.:) I like em. A LOT.
