Not far from my home there are large numbers of oryx. Are oryx horns suitable for knife handles? They can be mean as hell but make for a great green chile stew:)

i think so
they have deep ridges so it will have to be thick horn
would like to see some..

Pretty sure I have seen oryx horn done.

Just need a good thick sample that is stabilized properly (would leave that up to the right people) and a custom maker who is up to using horn like that. I would contact them up front so you know if you know how to treat the horn from the start till they get it.

I know little about horn from a start point like you're looking at, but I do love the end result! So I would really encourage looking into what you need to do to make it happen.

Eric from Ark Knives may be able to help for a start point.

I think it would make for some great knives in the end for many reasons.

I'll have to try and find some from a hunt years ago. The population exploded and now many of them end up road kill, man they can total a car.I can't remember what they look like from the inside. When they end up getting killed on the road, usually the state will give permission via the Sheriff to let people take em to get them off the road. I made a post on you're thread 110 Dave, just a dumb story about something that happened over 30 years ago. Was hoping it might take your mind off things for a moment. Some thought it was inappropriate, that was surely not my intention. Sorry Dave, you're in my thoughts and prayers everyday. Tom

Skyhorse,
Don't worry about the small stuff. I think Dave would take it the right way, don't want to put words into his mouth though.

For the horn, need to find a guy who is used to working with it. I know the lapis project wasn't easy since not many people work with stone.

Horn has to be treated right and stabilized so that it can be worked and not crack over time. If you have some stuff from years ago I would think that would be good and stable by now!

Please keep us posted. I love horn for a handle as do many others here!

Thanks ohen,I'm gonna see if I can track some down.It may take a while but I can also talk to some big ranch owners I know too. If I recall correctly, both male and female have horns. When I can hunt some down maybe we could find someone to make a batch of 110's for guys on the forum that may want one. (no charge for the horns)

Sky, Yes both sexes have horns the males grow longer over time . I've run into ranchers with Oryx horns from time to time as well . They've really increased the tags for those hunts and like you I've heard the meat is tasty . DM

Yeah David the meat is really good,I went on a hunt with my brother in law years ago and he scored a nice one.I just remembered that I know two range riders too, that would be a good source of info.If you're into hunting I know the success ratio is high,it maybe worth looking into.I had cooked some oryx green chile and made some burritos for the guys at work. They really liked em and I got a good laugh when they fond out it was oryx meat!

orix chili sounds so much like a vacuum cleaner commercial!!
