Long arrows are frequently used in South America by the indigenous people who use bows. there shots were at short range and through heavy foliage and the mass of the longer heaver arrow helped to keep the arrow from deflecting off leaves.
Longer arrows also commonly used where shots are taken in to the water. The mass aides in penetration and the length is a visual aid in overcoming the refraction of the waters surface.
