Hey does anyone use an oscillating spindle sander ? or just a spindle sander to round off the curves in finger grooves and yadda yadda? If so, what brand of machine do you use or have you bought? I'm looking for something like that cos it is just getting old doing a curve with a platen :D Thanks!

I use the oscillating spindle sander from grizzly. The only one I have seen cheaper is harbor freight, but the grizzly looked a little better to me.

I have one from Harbor Freight, the oscillation distance isn't very large, maybe an inch or so I think, and drums are hard to find for steel. I haven't looked very hard for the drums though. I would save your money, seriously I consider it a poor use of my money.

Better to buy a set of mandrels and drums and then use them in your drill press.move the table allthe way up to just below the drum and go to work. If you don't have a drill press clamp your knife in a vise and use a hand drill.

Thanks guys! I think I saw a set of sanding devices at Harbor Freight yesterday that looked like they would be used in a drill press!

Does the grizzly sander have a metal or plastic table?

I'll just throw this out there: there's a method that's just about free. Like most free things, it's not quite as good as the expensive solution, but hey, it's free :D

Take a 2" section of Bic pen and cut a slot down one side with a knife. You can't cut the slot with a saw, because even the finest saw leaves a kerf. But split it with a knife, maybe 1" down.

Then you can slide a 1" x 5" strip of sandpaper, any grit, into the slot. The plastic of the pen body is fairly rigid, and will hold the paper tight. Chuck it into your hand drill or drill press, and away you go.
