Can somebody tell me about 410 cutlery Stainless Steel. Is an edged weapon made of this steel worth takeing home or not?

Pappy I'm certainly no expert but i think 410 is often used for knife furniture like bolsters, guards, liners and frames.

Based on the alloy composition (less than 0.2% carbon), it doesn't look like it will hold an edge for long. You may be pleasantly surprised though, so dont take my word for it...

Check here for the full spec sheet:

It doesn't look like it would be much good without proper heat treating. I was looking at a Hawk that looked pretty nice but, I don't want to have to sharpen the thing every 15 minutes.:)

Pappy,
Andew is right:

410 stainless will harden to the 40-45 Rc range.
Edit: It would be pretty tough though, something you would want in a hawk. I think some of the originals were made out of brass.

Thanks for the confirmation. I don't think I would be throwing the one that I was looking at it is too good a weapon to be thrown away. Recreation throwing is fine bit some were not really intended to be thrown. 12 oz. head is a weapon for sure.:)

with a 410 stainless blade. It doesn't have the carbon and alloy composition to hold a decent edge, even with good heat treating.

And yes, 410 Stainless is most often used in liner-locking folding knives for locking liner springs and back spacers, where the maximum attainable 40+ RC is ideal...

Pappy,

Did you check out the ATC (American Tomahawk Co) hawks? Plain carbon steel which is what i would prefer for something thats going to take some abuse. I have been toying with the idea of getting one. But then given the current security-conscious environment I think the customs officials over here will probably press the panic button when they X-ray the package.

I also found Bruce Evans through bladeforums and he makes a real nice hawk too:

Pappy let me guess, you been checking out them tomahawks from Alan Foundry that are made out of 410 stainless. Look down a little farther on that same page and you'll see the carbon steel ones from the same company. That's what I'd get if it was me.
