OT: A stainless knife I couldn't resist

Lo and behold there's a gun show going on about five minutes from the house. Popped down there, had a look around, and wound up buying a knife. Yup, got a Fallkniven F-1. Good knife, honest, simple, about as devoid of "bells and whistles" as you could get in a modern production "survival" knife. I like the size and shape of it's blade, and the fact that it's convex ground. I'm not usually attracted to stainless blades and synthetic handles, but I know good gear when I see it. Whoever designed this one has spent some time outdoors. Can't wait to put that VG-10 steel through some testing. This one won't replace my JKM-1 forged by Shanker, but I think I can find some room in the duffel bag for it.

As I recall the Fallknivens have VG10 centers which is almostbut not quite stainless, but which is sandwiched between layers of 420 something which is both stainless and cryo-treated. 420 is fine for toughness and not rusting but somewhat poor at maintainting an edge. So you have yourself a laminated blade there like the old A.G. Russell Morseths.

Over my head Rusty, I don't even know what kind of steel is in files, I just know it makes good knives. This F-1's a sweet knife to be certain, but there's something comforting about running your thumb along the flat of a blade, and feeling the shallow ripples and dimples left by the blows of the kami's hammer. This one lacks that, and I'm fairly sure it was made in Japan using hi-tech automated equipment. A good knife and darn decent field tool, just no soul if you know what I mean.

Sorry, the F1 is straight VG-10. I was thinking of the A2.

Sarge you're gonna love the VG-10 I bet!!!! I have a little Spyderco Moran with the same steel and I like it a lot, a whole lot!!!!
It's not too hard to sharpen and holds and edge like you won't believe.:D

I really like the looks of the whole Fallkniven line, especially the big Bowie.:D

Cool knife Sarge.:D

I've heard of San Mai Ank, how does it seem to perform compared to Carbon V?

I did a little digging around and found that Cliff Stamp did an exhaustive T&E of the Fallkniven knives in VG-10. Based on his findings, I'm reassured that my instincts served me well today.

Good to know I'm not the only one who goes to gun shows for the knives. Never bought a gun at a gunshow, just knives. Oh, and some shotgun ammo. Oh, and .45ACP silvertip hollow points. And some paintball gear. But not a gun.

Hi Sarge, I think they are made in Sweden. Good knives made by good folks. Their website is here.

They have a forum on Knife Forums

Not the Cantina, but nice folks.:) They have some terrific bowies with leather handles. Not a Khuk, but nice!

I didn't buy this knife to use, I got it for my collection (Very Expensive). I also have a Trail Master in Carbon V that is very nice and tough. It holds an edge very well.

I started a thread on this a month ago on the general discussion forum, stating my surprise that they are not made in Sweden. They are made in Japan. Very fine knives.

Yes, yes, another Fallkniven convert :)

The new Fallknivens are in laminated steel, 420 on the outside, vg10 on the inside. They claim added strength with this construction. My Fallkniven F1 and S1 are both in in solid vg10 and the F1 has the older secondary bevel. Newer Fallkniven blades are all convex ground.

I think you can buy both the laminated and the solid versions right now, since the older stocks are not depleted yet.

Great knives from Sweden. The F1 is my alltime favorite utility knife.

Emile, I really do like the F-1. It's a good knife, and to me makes far more sense as a survival knife than all the sawtoothed, swordlike, monstrosities that would be about as useful in a true suvival situation as a sharpened lawnmower blade. Rambo wannabees might feel inadequate in the woods with this one, but I sure wouldn't.

Even from a Sears or Toro lawnmower blade? I sometimes like to mow the area where I intend to put up my shelter half. ;-)

I can't believe I left the "r" out of survival.:o I'm pretty sure a "suvival" is like a revival for SUV's.;)
