OT: Antelope hunting, with some Busse Combat content...

Dr Lunde,

Looks like a great day! Nice shooting by you and your Pops as well.

It's nice to see a pic of you! I don't know why, but I always pictured you as a portly man with a grey beard......

Nice goat Ken. It looks like you had a good time with your Dad.

Where exactly in WY were you? I used to live in Newcastle, but I've since moved more in the middle of the state.

We drove through Newcastle, yesterday afternoon, and on the way back to South Dakota this morning. We hunted just north of Moorcroft, about ten miles or so, on a ranch whose owner my dad knows. As you know, Moorcroft is about 55 miles NW of Newcastle, along Interstate 90.

Great stuff!! Show us some pics of the eating too hehe ;)

edit: man you guys got it good hunting and all, im in the wrong place lol

Here's the CGBATAC that I used, after I cleaned it up with some WD40 and a stiff nylon brush. Some of the WD40 on the handles is still drying. I took these photos about ten minutes ago on my parents' deck.

Nice pics and report, Ken. Man, that was a lotta driving for 40 minutes of hunting! Glad you filled your tags in short order.

Nice, 'lope, Ken! We have some still around Northern AZ, not far from here, and everything you said about their hearing, sight, and speed is absolutely on the money. Lots of fun to hunt, taste good, too! :D

A girl needs a knife...guess its time for a Badger, soon!

There are some nice antelope up in that area. Another good place is west of Newcastle, there's a lot of public land (Thunder Basin National Grassland) out there you can hunt on.

If you haven't done so before, you might try making some jerky out of some of the antelope. I think it's better than deer jerky.

Nice pics That looks like fun. I'd like to go hunting one day if I ever leave NYC. Maybe I'll just go stalk some game in the Bronx zoo but I do hate to leave Manhattan.
Really though I am envious of your father son adventures. We cliff dwellers never get to do that stuff.

Yesterday late afternoon my dad and I drove to the area where we hunted this morning, to see how many antelope were there, and because it was nearly sunset, it gives us an idea where they will bed down for the night. As we suspected, they were in the same area this morning.

Anyway, about yesterday's activities, a half-dozen of the bucks were looking at us while were we checking them out, from about 500 yards away. They could definitely see us from that distance. They have great eyes, and certainly can make it a challenge to get close.

Nice photos! 270 yards, thats a great shot. I've always like the 6.5x55, I've got an old German Mauser in that calibre with a 36" bbl shoots great groups alot better groups than I get with the old Italian Carcano in the sam cal.

I'll be lucky to get a half day of white tail in with the bow next Friday morning, that will be all I can get in for this year, missed (or will miss) turkey, duck, grouse, bear and moose. If I am lucky and I can get a day or two off in Australia next month I will be out hog hunting with knife/dog, it'll be my first time hunting with a knife! I can't decide which Busse to use....

How about a photo of the rifle ?
Certainly. It is a Cooper Arms M22 Phoenix chambered in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser (uncataloged) with Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 LR Varmint Hunter's reticle scope.

Here are a couple photos I took right after I mounted its scope:

BTW, the Outers Varminter Rifle Rest you see there is junk, in terms of a usable rifle rest, and is suitable only for cradling a rifle for cleaning or mounting scopes.

Here's the rifle that my dad used:

It is a Cooper Arms M52 Classic (French Walnut) chambered in .30-06. He mounted a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 scope on it. The photo above was taken three months ago, when he received the rifle as a gift from me, and before he had a scope for it.

Ah hunting season, love it.

I've never hunted antelope but I hear their a great challenge.

Usually takes a lot of time in over the years to fill a tag that fast congratulations.

Thanks for sharing
Helle

PS: since that badger is now used are you selling her cheap?:p

Wonderful!
Great thread and photos... family, knives (Busse), and guns. :D

I absolutely love the 6.5x 55.
Flat shooting, very little kick, and the ammo is now more readily available than ever.

Where did you purchase your gun at?

thanks for the pics . you're a lucky guy to be able to have you dad still hunting with you. what kind of rifles were you and your dad shooting ?

I load my own. 40.1gr of Varget in front of the Sierra 120gr Spitzer Pro-Hunter bullet seems to do the trick.:thumbup:

Because 6.5x55 SE is uncataloged, I had to order the rifle. I ordered it through First Stop Guns in Rapid City, South Dakota. I ordered it at the end of August of 2005, and it was done in late January of 2006.
