OT: Anybody like chess?

Thanks for the link. I haven’t played for a few years, and the website you mentioned might get me started again.

I like chess but it doesn,t like me . I guess I have no end game . Sad news for a hunter when he can,t move in for the kill ! L:O:L

I like chess, and people who are good love to beat me in ten minutes. I just don't know any of the advanced moves, or strategies. Just a novice, but I respect the game.

Thanks Danny. I like chess. I used to coach a chess club in a high school. It's been a few years since I played though.

I also like go. Again, my game is rusty. I find that is deeper than chess. You can probably find some good players over in Japan.

There is also Chinese chess. I fave been exposed to it a couple of times and got a couple of sets, hoping to start playing.

I could never play good chess.

By I think I can do much better in Chinese chess. Don't know why. Maybe the chess is too.....'confined' for me ? Chinese chess does have a little more room to manuver.

Andy I used to get beat in less than 10 minutes!!!! :(
My then girlfriend who became my 2nd wife was taught to play chess by her father and she said she would teach me.
Well her way of "teaching" me was beating my ass all and everytime and then laugh and rub it in for hours.:grumpy: There was no "teaching" to it.
Well I fixed her ass, I bought me a book on chess and I studied it fervently until I understood the game and several opening moves and the way to beat them.
She used one opening move most all of the time so she was easy to set up. One day she said, "Wanna play some chess?" and I said, "Yeah, why not."
Well her opening move had a way to be beat in five moves, it was a classic!!!! :D
She opened the board and I moved, she countered and I moved again, she countered and I moved again.
I was doing this fast and with no hesitation and with my best poker face.
Anyway I had her in the five moves just like the book said and it was in less than 10 minutes!!!!
I said, "Let's play again." She said, "Okay and grinned." I knew that she thought it was a fluke with me beating her like that, quick and easy.
We set up the board again and she did her 2nd classic opening. I had her ass again in just a few moves and said, "Let's play again." She said, "No I'm tired of the game right now, lets wait a few days."
Anyway in a few days she said, "Wanna play some chess?" I said, "Why not?" and we went at it again. After beating her again several times in just a few moves she got mad and wouldn't play anymore.
I asked her how it felt and showed her the book. She never asked me to play chess again...:D
And I've never played again either. Most game boards bore me to tears and I don't bore easily.

When I was in high school one of my teachers was pretty good. He could play without looking at the board, just calling out the moves. I rarely if ever could beat him.

One day I challenged him to 2 simultaneous games. He agreed to the ground rules of how we would trade moves at the beginning. I set it up so he moved first on board one, then I moved first on board 2, he replied on board 2, then i moved on board one, he replied on board one, etc. It took him about 5 moves to figure out I was reflecting his moves and the boards were mirror images of each other. He was effectively playing against himself. All of a sudden he realized he had to lose one or draw both. He started getting madder and madder, offering wild sacrifices to lure me into breaking out of the pattern. I just kept the pattern. Finally he said "This is hardly chess!" and knocked over the pieces, effectively resigning both games.

Then I played him an honest game and he was so flustered from the previous games he made a mistake and lost.

I was in 3 tournaments when I was younger and won them all, still have the trophies on my shelf. :) I played a few months on a deployment and beat everyone I played. I lost a game or two, but I could always beat them every time after that. I never liked the online chess though. I used to have a 1300 rating or so online, but it lacked the involvement and some of the fun of playing OTB (over the board). My decpetion moves don't work quite as well online, and I still have trouble figuring out exactly how some of the different sites use their flag settings resulting in a lot of cunfused endings when a timer that displayed five minutes left told me that I took too long. Since then, I only play OTB. I need to find some better local chess players, I haven't played anyone good in a while.

Cool story Howard. Hey that's how you learn. Mimicry is the ultimate form of flattery.

I never learned how to play chess, but the video game "Mortal Kombat: Deception" has a chess game on there which is idiot proof for knowing which pieces move which ways. I like how strategy is involved and no 2 games are ever the same.
