OT Ball Peen hammers...

I picked this one up on e-bay. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

It came with 2 small implements that I'm told are called torture knives. Why is that?

Am I the only one here with a BMFBPH? :( :p ;)
It's the only thing I have of the old man's that's been worth a damn.:D

nope...I have my Dad's and Grandfather's both...

Of course, they stay at home safe and sound. I use my own from 40 years ago for routine uses...

You have a peeing hammer Kis? Wow!

Big M-- F-- Ball Peen Hammer

In the pursuite of perfection of the technique of peining, (or if you insist, peening) - size isn't all that matters. A skillful peiner (or peener, if you insist) can pein (or peen, if you insist) with a smaller pien (or peen, if you insist) and can effect (or affect) material change with equal or better affect (or effect) as an unskilled pienman/peinist (or peenman/peenist) with a larger pien (or peen.) Skill, accuracy and velocity are the key to success here, rather than merely peinile (or peenile) mass.

Hmm, I'm not so sure about that. My wife prefers a larger pein AND a skilled peinman. She keeps asking my next door neighbor who is a machinist about his peining techniques and the size of his peining tools. (?) (I THINK she's talking about hammers, but maybe I had better check this out!)

Nope. Nasty has it right. Big M.F. Ball Peen Hammer.:D

Actually I have a couple of standard BMFH's. One is solid bronze and is calibrated in foot pounds of torque.;)

here is a picture of my ancient roman bronze ball peen hammer, with bone and ebony grip. was apparently owned by publius ampco, a famous centurian in the tenth legion.

Don't believe it. Those Romans were smart cookies...ampco was probably their local BruiseLeee and everyone had his name on their hammers in case they were found near a crime scene.

Looks like this hammer from Blade has been slightly modified for the modern era...

What's your assessment Nasty? Yea or nay?

I give it one thumb up...would have gotten two, but the handle effectively prevents comfortable use of the primary surface.

Straight shafts are best...I've heard that all my life.

Does anyone make a ball peen without the hammer part?

A ball peen on a stick.

I hope you guys aren't being taken in by all this and think you need to pay full boat for an authentic ball peen! I made my own using an authentic hickory handle (available for those of us in the know at the local Home Depot), and just glued a large trailer hitch ball to it!

Hey Bruise, apparently Norm does. Maybe he's taking orders? :D

Maybe Dan Koster will mwke you one?

This said, there are some hand-made items found in small towns and hamlets which are perfectly serviceable, and made in a traditional manner by highly-skilled practicioners of forging.

Skilled practitioners of forging? Wouldn't they be forgers? Who make forgeries?

Just curious.
