South Lake Tahoe in the early '70's - came to a traffic signal at the foot of Ski Run one evening in my Dad's truck with him driving, gave me the opportunity to take a real good look at a full dress, fully-lit up Harley that had been rear ended. Riders were already gone, and bike still laying there in middle of slow lane. Wouldn't have made any difference if they'd had the million candlepower strobe off the Cessna on the back of the bike.

Parents divorced when I was 13, then when I was 18 my dad told me if I wanted a bike put it together ( had parts for 4 complete Harleys in the garage ) but at the time I didn't have a clue, or any idea where to go to get one in the late 60's.

When I was 16 years old I bought a brand-new Honda XR 80 dirt bike.
I still owe it, and after 18 years it still rides perfectly.

I started out on a 500cc Triumph in the late 60's in southern California. In 1971 I got a '70 XLCH Sportster. Rode that for a few years, sold it and bought a Kawasaki Z1 900. That Z1 was very fast but no "cool" factor. Went back to a XLH Sporster in 1979. Currently I ride a '99 Wide Glide.

Been riding since I was 13 and my learner bike was a '37 Harley with a stick shift! Now it's down to an '02 Triumph Sprint (I was always partial to English bikes) , a comfy (but slow) BMW R65LS and my day to day "in the city" transportation a Honda Hawk. No car.

Have owned

1967 Matador Bultaco 250cc -- won second place in the SESC in 1967 Enduros.

1967 Bultaco custom made short tracker -- 250cc and NO BRAKES

1967 Pursang Bultaco -- Motorcross 1967.

1968 Yamaha Big Bear Scrambler

1954 Vincent Black Shadow - belch fire V2 -- one litre

Triumph Trident three cylinder.

Many others since.

Scariest was a 1988 Honda Hurricane 1000cc road rocket - had it to 160 mph once. Sold it before I died on it!

Still own

1959 BMW R69s
1976 Rokon woods bike with pull-to-start 360cc two cycle engine
1988 Honda Shadow 600 VLH street bike.

I LOVE BIKES!

Got my 100,000 mile patch from BMW in '95, then got hit by a truck while i was on a R90S near to restoration. Been downhill since then.

Currently: a '75 R90/6 with Hannigan fairing with 135k, a '78 R100 with R80 jugs with 128k, and the universal japanese motorcycle that started as Yamaha Radian. It now has a Yamaha XJ600 engine, KZ650 4.5 gallon tank, Kawasaki 454 cruiser solo saddle, Honda Nighthawk windscreen, and BMW rack and Kreuser bags.

Oh, and Shoei helmet and Aerostich Riderwear.

I LOVE that patch!! --Semp
Ditto:)!

I can't say that i'm surprised that this many guys in the cantina ride, have rode, or would ride given the chance. I love my little sporty, but i'm lusting after a bigger bike. Mine's just a tad light. gets blown around on the highway, won't set off turn arrows in turn lanes unless i can find and sit on the pressure plate, etc. I'm hoping to strap a tent, a pack, and a khuk to it and head for the woods for a weekend this fall.

1st. bike was a 62 Suzuki 125 (actually 118) that my dad got 2nd hand because somebody dumped it the 1st day attempting to ride. Easily fixed.

Currently a 2001 Night Train and 2002 V-Rod.

Got the Night Train as I had orders to Okinawa and it was easier to register, etc. I had plans to sell it to locals (at a good profit J) when I left but short notice orders scuttled that plan.

The V-Rod was kind of a fit of pique. I stopped by one of the overseas military sales places Christmas of 01 and inquired about the V-Rod as I had only seen pictures. The salesman stated that Harley wasn’t releasing any for military sales. I told the salesman that wasn’t allowed, a participating manufacturer had to release their whole line.

He told me that was not true. I related that I knew of the stink when the Viper came out and all the Vipers released into the overseas military sales program were sucked up by the civilians running the program in violation of the contracts.

I sent a letter to Harley and forgot about it. A couple of months later while deployed a Lt. working for me and still in the rear called me and told me that something called a V-Rod was available.

Having never seen one, let alone ride one I decided to buy at the price. I figured that the 1st year of anything would have issues. But being a 1st year Harley, 1st liquid cooled DOHC, aluminum frame, etc. I wouldn’t lose money.

I prefer the Night Train.

Nasty Nice patch. Looks a little like Charlie. What da ya think? Can we "slip" it past the OL's? Just kidding.

Had to revisit this thread. Been reminiscing. '68 16 yrs old, 1st ship (SS American Victory) 2nd foreign port. Sattahip, Thailand. Several shipmates & I rented bikes . Honda's I believe. This is THE one I learned to ride on. No more riding b**ch! Rode it hard, looped it out, laid it down & almost ran it dry. But I learned. Mama-san patched me up more than one time in the parking lot of the bar. Aaah, memories & lessons learned where would we be without them?

I dont ride motorcycles because I value my bipedal abilities.
However, I used to restore Nortons.
My favorite was the Norton 850 Commando, but all the Nortons were cool.

Please be careful on those things. It aint a matter of IF, its a matter of WHEN and HOW BAD.

Wish you hadn't brought this topic up SteelyGunz. Only reason I managed to make it home without a bike today was that the Honda shop didn't have bike I wanted(*and even if I get unbearable urge to stop at another one, should be safe, as the Magna was discontinued for 2004. :) ) Way I felt today though, don't think there's any way I woulda been able to listen to salesman and not buy a bike. :)

etp?

You know....this is the time of year that some wonderful deals are available. And the bikes today are darned near bullet-proof, but still get traded like they are going to self-destruct after 20k. But they really can go tens of thousands of miles after that....waaay beyond 100,000.

But, I wouldn't want to suggest you keep thinking of it. Obviously, you've made up your mind.

Kis

lol, I really can't afford a bike right now, but really want one. :) Actually almost bought one on Ebay, the most evil site around. ;) Had two up right now down in Dallas area. Luckily I rememberewd that it's been 10 years or so sine I've been on a bike, and hadn't really learned to ride then, so at least going to put this off until I can take a safety/training class. Well, towards buying one in another city. Can still buy one here locally if I can find one and jsut bring it home in my pickup. :D
