I live about a mile from the start of the Rockies, got the plains to the east and mountains to the west, I can't see them, I'm too close. The raptor's nest around here this time of the year. They close off a lot of the open space so's not to disturb the birds. Ever seen a pissed off mother bald eagle ?

The road to work is ten miles through agricultural land, our open space buffer, which keeps reality away from Boulder :D. The trees lining the road are occupied by nesting birds, bald and golden eagles and red tailed hawks.

We had some pigeons move into the area behind work, A juvenile red tail made an example out of him, the others got the hint. Had a hard time not spooking him to get the shots.

The area I walk the dogs on weekdays is home to some great horned owls. Occasionally a big male will swoop low over head checking to see how fat my corgi's really are.

I finally remembered the camera and snapped some shots. I'm not sure if I've photographed 2 or 3 different owls, I think 3 different ones, couldn't find the forth from before.

Very cool pics.... from one hunter to another, I really respect those birds. Plus, they keep the mice and rats out of my deer feeders. :D:thumbup: I call up the big 'horned' owls from time-to-time while putting out a varmit call. ;)

Cool stuff!

By the way, be careful! They will attack a corgi size dog. I've been photographing a great horned owl nest over the past week, and I saw Mama Owl send several dogs to the veterinary clinic for stitches.

Would you like us to post our bird of prey shots? (I'd enjoy sharing, but don't want to steal your thunder.)

Also, a good idea not to wear a 'furry' style hat.. (think Russian).. around them. They have been known to attack such hats as prey and lead many men down the dark road that is known as Rogaine....

Nice pix of that owl.
I hear one around here at my house from time to time, and I keep trying to find it for pix but no luck so far.

Three years ago we had two baby Red Tailed hawks in the woods next to my house. When they where learning to fly and hunt we had to watch all our dogs: four Chihuahuas and two Corgis. The hawks wheren't interested in the corgis but they seemed to enjoy watching the Chihuahuas. I also watched one hawk swoop our neighbor's chihuahua, though for sure that dog was a gonner but he hawk just landed in a tree and watched the dog.

JJ---Thanks for the pix! I remember when raptors were shot on site! You should put up a screech owl box. They love them. Eight people got screech owls this year in boxes I made for them. It was really cool. Thanks.

Great pics Jimmy!

I love going out in the evening and listening to the owls.

Love to see the pictures, gopher it :D

Really great pics, JJ! I've been watching a golden eagle hanging out along the road up the mesa, and had burrowing owls a few years back when I lived in Phoenix, but have not seen any here recently. Thanks!

Here are a couple shots of the great horned owl nest, over this last week. (There are still lots to get online, and I'll be taking more over the coming weeks, as the chicks grow up.):
