OT: BMW the cars

I'd be looking hard at Subaru. The WRX is a monster.

Eventually, I'll need something with 4 doors.

I drive a Miata, though. Paid for with 165K on the clock.

LOL...I see my little want to be anonymous buddy that tried to send me negative rep points in another thread (twice, back to back) has done the same in response to my post in this thread.

Little guy...you do not have enough points to take anything away from me...all that happens is little grey boxes show up and you get recorded in the system. You are wasting your time at 2:37 and 2:40 in the morning. I would guess that it's also a bother having to log off and on to change your identities frequently.

Perhaps I should ask Cougar or one of the other Mods to look you up and explain it all to you?

Be well little troll...sometimes bad things happen to bad people.

BTW Gentlemen...this forum is viewed by children. Please keep that in mind in your choice of language.

BMW are Bavarian - so am I - but I never drove one (I had a VW first and a Renault since) because BMW is a bit expensive. I hear they are good cars, some ar kind of a diva at high speed (but then you have a speed limit in the US...-we do not have on the German Autobahn). They are safe cars - and some do not like them in really hard and slippery winter because they are propelled from the rear axe while the main weight is on the motor block (front axe). However one of my favourite cars is a BMW. How do you like this one?

Even Elvis had a BMW Isetta...

I have to disagree with the statement above. You're correct that most BMW are RWD (and some are AWD), but what makes them such a great handling cars is their nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution, which mechanically eliminates over steer/under steer. Yes, they are harder to drive in slippery conditions for someone who doesn't know how to drive a car in such conditions (especially a RWD car), but then again, that same driver would be a hazard in any car. Also, most BWMs come with low profile high performance tires that won't handle worth damn in snow, and some people still continue driving on those tires all winter long, thus making the car very hard to control under the circumstances. A good set of winter tires will make any BMW just as good of a winter car as anything else.

Besides the MINI, we also have a WRX wagon (can you tell we like hatchbacks?). It's been a great car: >73,000 miles in 3.5 years.

However, for mamav, if she's looking for the level of comfort and luxury that a BMW gives, the Subaru WRX is just not going to offer it. The Subaru Legacy GT (wagon or sedan) would probably be a better choice (and it's still a powerful beast of a car, just more BMW/Audi-like on the interior quality).

This has been just the discussion I wanted. My chevy is probably going to not be replaced as I don't want the maintenance hassles, but if I decide to switch I'll have some ideas to throw around. I'm glad I asked as I was getting pretty tempted, I think the thing that really settled it was the porcupine, though, it actually took me a couple hours to get that one   :D Thanks for the input. This place is full of wisdom and probably a fair share of BS, but mostly good, old, life earned wisdom. You guys are great. :)

And Nasty, whatever did someone try to give you red cacti for? I was wondering what gray boxes meant, as I got one of those the other day, too.....now I know. Guess I better be good.

Kis, I've wanted one of those since they came out with the new little bugs, purple with gray interior with purple velour seats :D Just can't quite bring myself to do it with all the long distance trip I make these days and my present body condition. But You just never know....maybe with a live in masseus:rolleyes:.....I had a bug back in '78 that we shipped to Germany with us.....absolutely loved that little thing.....the ex got it in the divorce though. Back then the trip across the states in January, Ogden, Utah to Deleware, wasn't even that bad. We hit a bad snow storm and just followed the lights on a truck and made it just fine. Of course, some of the pot holes in Pennsylvania were about the size of the car, but then what can we say. I did notice that the back windows never did deice....on the inside......the whole trip :D but the front was nice and toasty. Loved that little thing. And I can just see myself in an old VW van painted purple with pink polka dots and fuzzy dice in the windows and...........

Do not--repeat--DO NOT buy a VW Van of any vintage. They are the hybrid result of a shoebox and a kite. Some states will not allow them on bridges during windy weather. The heat box system of the air-cooled engines could not warm the interior of a VW van...not even in summer. After-market blower fans, gas heaters (!), nothing worked to heat.

Also, unless things have changed dramatically, you have all the leg protection that a 3/16ths sheet of of steel can give you in a front-end collision.

Actually, I wasn't thinking of the bug, but of the medium-sized sedans and wagons.

(But the old vanagons and earlier versions had the very best use of interior space in any vehicle I have ever had. Sleeping, stashing, icing, and eating were marvelously thought out and executed. Only down-side was that the kids were too far away to seriously threaten when they were torturing each other, strapped into the passenger seat.)

mamav, VW makes a great variety of models even though it's most commonly associated with the old WW2 era beetle :)

Golf and Yetta (called Bora now over here) are their smaller models, Passat is about the same class as BMW 3 and 5 series (models 3xx and 5xx). Phaeton wouldbe about the size of BMW 5 or 7 series and is quite expensive (as are BMW 7 series models). I think that's what Kismet had in mind, not the new beetle - check out used VW models, they are on par with BMW as far as quality is concerned but unlike Audi (= owned by VW now) or BMW you pay less.

No reason except perhaps that they don't have a real job or know how to handle money Gin...they probably got a thorn in their side that I have the Lincoln, Avalanche and the Harley. Tough to be a loser...they have to resort to anonymously attacking.

Unfortunately for them, their dirty little secret screen names have no oomph...it takes Josh, Yvsa, munk or a very few others to red me, so the attack only drops a little grey **** in my record and counts for exactly what their opinion is...nothing.

It's nice to be impervious to random bad deeds. I intend to continue to give water for the cacti of other good people...they (you) should be imprevious too...and I will give all I can to help.

Haha, I got anonymous rep from somebody too, somebody who knows I was sliced and diced by Duvon at the Reno Khonvention, lol. I don't think it's negative rep though--gray just means that they don't have enough rep or posts to give out positive rep--negative rep shows up as red. Still, nice to sign your name to your rep so we know who you are. :D

ROTFLMAO :D :D :D :D :D

I got 2 blue boxes last night :D But at least the kind guys over at the cove gave me water since i had to spread the wealth around. I went over there and hit up the rep thread. Wouldn't let me give it to anyone over here, so guess I'll start frequenting a couple other places just to spread some cheer.LOL

OK, mods, find out who's trolling the blue, gray, whatever boxes. Inquiring minds need to know ;) :D

REally!!! What time did your's arrive? Mine were on Apr 14 at 0636 and 0640. I'm surprized that whoever didn't get the dreaded "You must spread some reputation around" posting that soon.

I think that's what a gray or blue box is. :D

A gray square (might look bluish depending on your monitor) means somebody tried to give you a rating on that post but failed -- the system refused it. That could be because he rated another post of yours too recently, or because he's been clicking his mouse as fast as he can and rating everything in sight and the system thinks he should give it a rest for a while, or because his own rating is so negative the system figures nobody cares what he thinks of their posts.
(From a thread about the rep points.)

Oh, and BTW, consider the maintenance costs and running costs of a car. If the car needs premium gas, for example, will you get annoyed at the car when you're filling it up and notice that the regular unleaded is lots cheaper?

If not, well, I'll shut up.

But if that would annoy you, don't get a car that drinks high-test. And also take a look at the cost/frequency of replacement of things like tires, brakes, etc. Does it need special oil?

I choose to believe that the blue/gray ones are Uncle Bill and Rusty sending special rep points from Heaven. :D
