What is a boot knife? Is there any one definition? All of my searches come up blank. Is there something special about the sheath? Im interested in making one, not to carry (dont want to open that can of worms(or my foot)), just for shlts and grins. Knowing that this place is full of people, and there is always someone who knows something about anything you could ever want to know, does anyone have any information?

Thanks

Generally a boot knife is a dagger, usually with a sheath that will clip inside your boot. Here's a good example below.

some boot knives have a "button" for attaching it to a stud on your boot.

Either way, most people I've talked to that have boot knives say they hardly notice it there. I'm sure it depends on the size.....can't be too long. But it's supposed to be comfy. Sorry I can't offer personal experience.....wait...no I'm not.....:D  :p

Don't have any now, and even when I did, only cared in boot once or twice. I like them, with clip and all in sheath, fo ran angled small of back carry, inside paints. handle sticking up and out to my right side, turned till it's almost parallel to belt.

In another lifetime, I found:

like an ankle holster, the comfort of the boot knife depends an awful lot on the shape of the sheath, and the boot itself. Basically a Hide-Out knife, rarely are they in position for quick retrieval; most often the pants' leg covers the top of the boot. They also immediately qualify as a concealed weapon, and put you in an uncomfortable category with LEOs.

Never trust fiction or movie depictions of their use.

That being said, some are works of art which should never be hidden from view--they are just too pretty.

I carried a boot knife in my (surprise!) right boot for a few years, when I worked at Chevron and later when I drove cab. The nicest one I carried, and still have, was a 4" dagger style G96 belt and boot knife that my dad gave me in 1978. Beautifully made, sharp as hell, with an integrated aluminium handle. Very strong and light. Also have a SOG Pentagon in a kydex sheath made for me by the Cutlery Shoppe in Boise back when they still made sheaths. Excellent configuration. The ideal boot knife is about 4" blade with a max length of about 5".

I wore Mason or Red Wing 8" logger boots, and the ideal way to wear it was on the outside of the right boot (being right handed), with the clip on the inside of the boot. I would either buy extra long laces or leave the top holes unlaced, and then wrap the extra lace around the outside top of the boot and around the sheath. Just have to bend your leg or tug at the pants leg and the knife could be very quickly drawn.

The new Applegate-Fairbairn boot knife is a great choice for this category, chopping a little more than an inch off the standard fighting knife. Boker is making them now in desert camo, but I think you can also get them in the standard black.

Norm

I carry my SERE clipped to the inside of my book bag.
I have owned boot knives in the past, but the legality issue made it a serious waste of time to carry it on my person.
In Texas, you can get a license to carry a gun, but the boot knife thing is still a big no-no.
I cant afford legal problems, so I just went with the book bag routine.
(I still do it sometimes here in Japan, but not too often. I actually wear an HI karda in a tiny sheath I made for it, next to my wallet in my back pocket.)

I wear a Cold Steel mini culloden in my slip on Wolverines that i use for bike riding boots. I bought it right before my gal and i went to New Orleans for spring break a couple years ago. i knew it wouldn't be any use to me, but it made me feel better about walking around the French Quarter at night. the place can be tricky. You stray one block and you've gone from tourist to target;) I tried wearing my JKM in my boot for awhile. Worked great, but i found that blade just too dang useful to tuck away. Here in Indiana there are no real restrictions on knives and how you wear them, so i just wear the JKM on my left side and tuck it into left back pocket behind my checkbook. if i'm going into a store where i think i might get a funny look for wearing a fixed blade, i simply push the handle under my belt and you can't even tell what it is. If you make one, Jebadiah, be sure to post picks:)

What's the matter guys? A dude can't be a man's man -and- wear girly things from time to time;)? I'm a lumberjack and i'm ok.

Do you ever carry it in your boot? Do you find it worth the trouble to do so?

No. On the rare occasions I carry it, it's clipped to my belt.

He only has one boot.

Thanks Bruise, you've been very helpful. :)

I didnt expect so many people to respond. I think it would be a decent spot to carry a knife but not worth the legal hassle.

Thanks

Jebadiah?

The Cantina represents a LOT of mis-spent Ute. er, youth.

Not many mistakes at least one of us hasn't made; some have even learned from them.

I'm a lumberjack...gleat gleat gleat!!!
