I've got a Ka-Bar but that's it, I'm thinking a more classic big bowie would be nice though. So what do you guys have, what do you think of them, and where did you get them?

How much are you willing to spend? Are you looking for beautiful tough, or just tough? I assume you don't want just beautiful. :)

The Becker BK-9 is a nice and reasonably priced knife. Not too "beautiful" though. But it's a tough knife that won't empty your pocketbook. Just depends on what you want.

I will also say the BK-9. I have one and have enjoyed it. Thought is was super big and tough until I found this place.:) For the money it is very hard to beat. I think that it is one of the best values on the market. As Semper Fi said, it isn't very pretty.

No, not that pretty. It does seem to have that extra mass that I was looking for but not that classic look. Unfortunately, I imagine a bowie similar in quality to HI would seem way over priced for me.

Well, the Beckers are good knives. If you're looking for a little more traditional, I'd go with Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. They're good looking in a utilitarian kind of way, and they're tough as nails. Same 5160 steel you're used to in the khuks. Ted is a nice guy to deal with, too. :)

Hmmmm. Try the Camillus Western Bowie. It has that "look" and isn't a bad knife. Have to edit myself here, just checked and they have changed the steel to 420 so it is a bit pricey for what you get. I had one years and years ago. Sniff, sniff, my first big knife.Oh sorry about that. Should be able to find one fo $100 or there about.

Go for a Cold Steel Trailmaster. Great knife, with a "classic" full grind. it's thick, hefty, and a helluva knife for about $100.

Thanks for all of the quick help guys. So far, the Camillus seems closest to what I had in mind. It is exactly what comes to my mind when I think of a bowie knife. I'm also like the EDMF stuff, seems like they would make good military items. Each of the blade designs packs a wallop like our kukris but also has a D gaurd with studs on it!

Check out the "my stuff" button under my signature. I have a pile of them available in all shapes and sizes.

C'mon, THIS isn't what you think of when you think bowie?? ;)

Okay, it was just an idea. When you say Camillus, do you mean Becker, Western, or OVB?

Western. N2S-you mean you have the EDMFs right? I can't seem to find them under "my stuff". I checked the military, commercial, and custom sections.

Just one word of advice on the Western: Skinny. It is very thin bladed, and being 420, the edge won't last super long either. Depends on what you want it for, but if you're planning on putting it to much use at all, I'd look elsewhere. They used to be great knives, but since the majority of the knife buying public doesn't do much outside anymore, and doesn't know good knives from bad, the manufacture went to cheap materials and lots of polish. Makes business sense, it's just unfortunate. Just my 2 cents.

I'd forgotten how cool the Cherokee Rose was. :)

Actually, let me make one more suggestion, and then I'll shut up. :D
Look over at Valiant and look under the link to bowies. I'll vouch for the quality and Wandi. They're tough and sharp. By the way, there's a twin of the Western Bowie there in Damascus for about twice the Western's cost.

t1mpani,

The older Western W-49 had carbon steel 3/16" thick blades. The company has been sold a couple of times during the 70s and 80s and Camillus is now manufacturing the brand.

No, I meant bowie style knives.

Oh I know! If an older one can be found, then it's a great knife. I haven't seen one for a long time though.
