I was surprised today when I found my C&R License in the mailbox. It only took 40 days from mailing the application until I received it. Good job BATF.

Now let me at all those mil-surp weapons.

A warm welcome to the club, Steve. :D Mine took over 3 months. :grumpy:

All right- here's a hot tip- if you DON"T already have a CZ-52, go HERE and order one in hard-chrome. All their HC stuff is unique to them and well-done.

http://www.classicarms.us/

They'll let you fax your C&R, most won't. OH!- real important- Do NOT sign the original, whatever you do. Make about 30-50 xerox copies, sign THOSE in blue ink, and start mailing them to the C&R dealers you think are tops. That's how it works. There are C&R forums, and lots of info elsewhere, but that's the important thing. Put that original license in a safe. Don't have a safe? :D You'll be buying one. Or more. Soon.

More unsolicited advice from a C&R-smitten Zombie:

1. You need a K31. Get a few; what's $100 now will most likely be $300 in a few years. I got a stock blem from AIM for $69 once. (AIM has the bayonet too, people on ebay regularly pay over $100 for one, they're $90 at AIM right now.)

(oh yeah. and this market is so fickle, if you want something, you better get it- wait til next week and they're gone forever.)

(gratuitous CZ-52 pic)

2. You need a CZ-52 (see above).

3. You need a Yugo Mauser (or any good K-98). Get a clean M48 or M48A. The ammo is too cheap to NOT shoot one of these regularly.

4. You need an SKS. All this assumes you already HAVE a Norinco one, but the Yugo SKS is a great buy and will teach you all about your new best friend and worst enemy, COSMOLENE. Boy will you be learning about cosmolene.... Muahahahaha!

5. You need a WHOLE BUNCH of Mosin Nagants. M38, M44, best of all, the lovely, awesome, wonderful-to-shoot and oh-so-accurate M39.

6. You need a new credit card. See numbers 1-5 above.

I 'splained them all in another thread.

Must go Tru-Oil another coat onto my latest- a Yugo M24/47 Mauser from AIM. $119; streaked walnut stock, came with bayo, cleaning kit, leather ammo carrier, the whole nine yards. Or the whole nine meters.

Only thing is, your going to be blowing your khukuri money on firearms....

And you need to train your UPS man. Wasn't easy in my case; the guy's the spittin' image of Gomer Pyle.

"Well, golllllll-lee, Mr. Mike, looks like you got ANUTHA them big long heavy boxes."

Holy smoke, AA. I'm going to have to get a second job for gun money.

I have a Norinco SKS and a Carl Gustov Mauser and a Chinese Model 53.

Some items classic has are irrestible.

Question about chroming a gun. Doesn't the thickness of the chrome ruin the fit and function of the weapon? Detract from it's collector value?

I know a guy that had a Garand gold plated on many parts around the receiver. It never worked right after that.

Hard chrome is supposed to be some kind of molecular-level change. I dunno, but I got one of their HC M44's and it works better than fine, and is enhanced corrosion resistant (sea water). Cheaper by far than a stainless Mini-14 for marine usage.

It was partly kidding, but when the CZ52's dried up the first time, people were missing the HC ones. But you need a K31 first.

I know I want a HC CZ52... and they will be gone again... but I'm short, for some reason.

Seriously, you're in for some fun.

Mike

oh yeah- they only HC value-less firearms. Of course. Draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa and somebody's gonna get mad.

Classic Arms is good people to deal with...I gotta get me one of those K31's...Handled one before and now I lust after one!!

Better watch that lust stuff stuff, Dave or you could end up on the C&R offenders list!

Never EVER buy anything built on a Century Arms receiver.
I just had to cut up the receiver on an unsafe CAI M1 Garand I bought used.
The gun wouldnt headspace, was a mismatch of parts, including M14 rr sight.
I got HOSED buying that piece of dung.

DaddyDett

DD's advice is noteworthy... there have been probs with the receivers on GP-WASR 10's Century modifies as well. Neither are C&R's though.

It can be real buyer-beware. That's why it pays to "know" dealers as best you can.

My experience in dealer-ability:

1. AIM/Wholesale Guns & Ammo (M39s)
2. Classic
3. Century
4. anybody else
5, Inter-O________

Not flaming anyone, just pointing out some reps better than others.

Mike

Heh, CAI receivers.

I trust their AK receivers; the tolerances are so loose by design that even they have a hard time screwing them up. They managed to screw mine up anyway. (Incorrectly cut magazine well.) I fixed it by hogging it out with a Dremel, if that gives you any idea of the sort of fit that we're looking for here.

What really got me mad was that I spent all that time cutting the weld holding the muzzle cap on, finally got it off, and discovered that there were no threads.

I wouldn't trust them with a Garand/M1A receiver, though. The bolt locks into the receiver, not the barrel, and there is much that can go wrong if the fit isn't just right. And by "go wrong," I mean shrapnel.

Speaking of K31's, I shot up a bunch of the Wolf 7.5 about a week ago -- it seems to be good stuff. Bit pricier than the GP-11 but it's reloadable.

Thank you guys for the Century Arms heads up. How can they get away with that?

I'm leaning toward a CZ-52 and a K-31 as my first two. With ammo. I don't have either one already.

I've been on the sites you guys posted. Lot's of newbie C&R fun. I think half the fun is in shopping.

May I have opinions on the best place/s for the CZ-52 and the K-31 and what condition should I request?

I got these from J&G Sales.

czs23bc.jpg

They're all about the same price. $129-ish. Some come with holsters, some a spare clip.

AIM (to me) is the best place for a case of the 7.62x25 ammo. 1980's made Romanian. Same price as the gun (!) for 1,200+ rounds.

K31's, too, are about the same price everywhere... $110 ugly beech (can be steamed and refinished),up to $150 for pretty walnut.

Searching is half the fun.... Steve, please post your links if you make a good find.

Mike

OK. I've made up my mind on the CZ-52. Either Aim, Classic Arms or J&G seems to have the best looking pistol and deal.

Aim calls them excellent and has holster and two magazines. All are $139.00.

How about it?

Or maybe there is an even better choice?

I'll check here tomorrow and then order.

It's difficult to read this thread and not want to buy all the guns ever made.

Yahoo.

I just ordered a CZ-52 from AIM and some ammo. Comes with a holster and two magazines. Not to mention I can carry it. Now that's a new toy!

It was easy and it will be gere tomorrow. 1 fax and 1 phone call. I never thought buying guns could be so easy. I'm not wild about the mandatory $30.00 air freight charge.

Now to find a K-31 and I know what I'll be doing this weekend - shooting!

Do I sound like I'm having fun yet?

AIM are good folks.

Only pistols get that overnight charge, and THEN, you can beat it if it's sent to a friendly gun store.

Mostly rifle boxes come UPS for $10-13-15.

CZ52 is a LOUD round, but not heavy recoil. You'll like it. Penetrates realllll well. Post us some impressions when you shoot it, Steve.

Mike

On to this weekend.

I'll shoot my new CZ-52.

I'll also shoot my unfired Chinese Model 53 and Norinco SKS. As I recall they both take the same ammo as my AK-47. I have plenty of that ammo due to a tip on Wolf from HD. Have I got that right? Don't want to blow myself up.

Steve and Mike; What do you think of its cartridge as a self defense round?

munk

Steve, a bolt action Chinese Model 53 is a Mosin-Nagant variant and takes a rimmed round called 7.62x54r, NOT the rimless 7.62x39 that the SKS and AK shoots.

Both are .30 but not interchangable. Be careful.

munk, for self defense 7.62x25 is lousy- over penetration- unless the assailant is wearing a vest- they go through those I am told :-)

they make 7.62x25 hollowpoint ammo; makarov.com has it.

Thank you for the ammo heads up.

I've been making like a mailman tonight stuffing envelopes to the dealers listed in this thread with my C&R. Hope I don't run out of stamps.
