OT : Can anyone recommend a nice backpack

For around town I use either a messenger bag or the medium briefcase here: www.saddlebackleather.com

For everything else I've got a maxpedition, a couple dakine's and a camelback bag. All got on the cheap. If you're interested in a saddleback bag I'll email you the link to their ebay store where they sell seconds. I got one for less than half what it normally goes for....and it's only blemish is some light wrinkles in the leather and a dent in the flap.

I've spilled coffee on my messenger bag...it was dragged across the pavement by my godson (who was just trying to help :p), it's been rained on, been up to the snow and been up and down the slopes (kept my sketchpad in it so I could do a couple quick sketches from the top of a run...and gotten all wet and frosty), it's been chewed on by my niece and had a fair taste of guiness at the pub last week :p. It's looking better than ever. I highly recommend their bags. They're rediculously tough and I honestly believe I'll have the same ones in 50 years.....

I saw Blackhawk mentioned earlier, I use some of their stuff, but be wary... The ruck straps are notorious for slipping at higher weights, if you're going the route of a framed pack. I've even heard a couple complaints from the tac tailor ones... however I've had eagle ones for a while and, although they aren't quite as padded, they have never started to slip, plus they have disconnects that have surprisingly never broke and make unassing a pack very easy..

Oh yeah, check out Eagle too

You've gotten the top brands:
Kifaru
Maxpedition
HSGI
SnugPak
Mystery Ranch

etc.

But real advice can't be given on which pack without info on how you are wanting to use it. For instance, Maxpedition makes great stuff for a moderate price, but if you want to go on a two-week expedition, all of their models are too small.

thanks for all the help lads - reckon I'm going to go with a Maxpedition remora !! Nice and compact, if I needed somthing bigger the condor looks great but I just need a nice small edc !!

Mystery Ranch has the usual quick-adjust Fastex-type buckles, but they LOCK! They still adjust with one hand, but there is a little "thumb bar" you have to press to move the strapping through the buckle.

No more slipping straps....

Stay sharp,
