OT: Careers in Law Enforcement--advice please!!

I have been a corrections officer for the last 16 years. It is dangerous. Would not recommend it unless you have a degree or the capacity to move up in the system. The money is fair here in Michigan....If I could do it all over again, I would have finished my degree and stay out of the pen.

May not be the same thing, but around the west coast POST breaks down to Peace Officer Standard Training.

There's another element to a career in Law Enforcement, at least in my experience. Cops, assistant D.A.'s, etc...tend to become isolated in their social lives. That is to say... either it happens because of their friends' lack of appreciation of them, or their lack of appreciation of their friends. The lives become so different and a day at the office is vastly dissimilar.

So, at least in Chicago, cops, Illinois IBI (when it existed), State Police, and Local government attorneys tended to hang out together...after work...etc.

Other things I noted...and this is NOT a sweeping statement, just a personal observation...is that some substance abuse (alchohol mostly) seem to pop up, and a lot...LOT of marital discord and divorce.

just things to consider.
