OT computer security

Is this true? I guess I could go to the site and have a look, but I'm lazy.

I just downloaded it again today after being aadvised by a tech to uninstall it while I was getting the DSL hooked up.
It's still FREE!!!!:D

When I got the new Dell two months ago, some security ad got into the system and kept on bringing itself up as the "home" page every time I turned the puter on. I kept on going back to the start menu and putting MSN back, but sure as hell, the damned ad was there next time.

I finally put ZoneAlarm on, and it blocked the cookie from alerting the system to change the home page. That and PanicWare pop-up stopper took an enormous amount of aggravation out of the new system.

The virus scan that came with it seems to work....so far.

But, most certainly, for every solution there will be a new problem developed to circumvent it.:)

If any of the forumites here are having trouble with popups, spyware or hijackware, this is a good site to visit Spyware Info

The mods and forumites there are very helpful and they will analyse your configuration and registry for you if you need help with a problem. They are moving to a new server so the site might not be active for a few days though.

Running Ad-aware or some other spyware removal program also is good.

I also go into the cookie directory now and then and delete them manualy.

I'm running Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster and McAfee's Personal Firewall. Spybot finds some stuff that Adaware didn't and vice versa. Oh yeah, I'm also running a free AV called AntiVir. Available here: Free AV

Well I added Ad-Aware to my list of guards finally.:)

Bruise which cookies do you delete manually if you don't mind me asking? I see my cookie file growing by leaps and bounds, but don't want to delete any websites that I frequent, which admittedly aren't many usually.
Most of the new websites I've visited in the last few days are the ones necessary for getting DSL setup along with its two free bonus deals.

I'm using in order of perceived importance:

1-Naviscope
2-Norton antivirus
3-Norton internet security
4-Zone-Alarm Pro
5-Spybot search and destroy
6-AdAware
7-Bazooka

I have been using computers since the late 70's. I have never gotten a virus, a trojan horse, or a worm, or any other kind of "infection". I do not use any type of anti virus software.

I do not use any type of security software other than encryption for sensitive data. My data is secure and my equipment has firewall and port protection built in to the hardware and operating system.

My secret? I use a Macintosh computer and avoid all Microsoft software.

I delete em' all. The cookies just store information about settings and stuff that you set for the site. Lessay the cookie from here (bladefoums). It might store your username and password. If you deleted the cookie you'd just have to login again when you entered the site to post. There might be a couple of other minor things that cookies store though. Personally I just remember or write down all my passwords somewhere and forget about keeping cookies. You might just try copying your bladefourms cookie somewhere and deleting the one in the cookie folder and see what happens first.
