OT: Credit Fraud

Oooops. I see I forgot to clarify how I found out that some punk was using my card. I was at a Best Buy purchasing my wife's Christmas present only to find out my card was declined. I knew full well I had plenty of $$$ in my acount. So I went home and called my bank to find out it had ben suspended or "red flagged". I don't know why a "red flag" went up after they bought some gas and before the second attempt. Even the agent couldn't tell me for sure. But I am sure glad it did and I have to give Wells Fargo props for that at least. :)

Sorry to here the Bad news TL. Glad they didn't get much.

I got a fake North Face Denalli in today from e-bay. It was for my wife.
I feel like an idiot, I was once warned there was some fake North Face products passing through ebay. Maybe I'll get it resolved but dought it.

This time of year does bring out the thiefs.

That really sucks, especially this time of year.

Was it a true debit card, or just a checking account card?

After a similar problem myself, I only use a true debit card in public, as you have to have a pin # in order to make it work.

hope they catch the dirtbag! there is no honor among thieves! the dirtbag needs to be locked in a soundproof room and go a few rounds! or left in the great outdoors with nothing but honey and blood poured on him (make it his own blood!)

Good idea!

I was thinking more along the lines of locking him in a room with Jerry and Skunk with a bottle of Pig's Nose tied around his neck! :p

Ken44: That really sucks. This time of year is feast of famine! Crazy.

Someone got my debit card number two weeks ago and spent $2300 at a Greek travel agency. I just got the money restored to my checking account yesterday, but from now on I'm going back to a credit card only. At least with a credit card, the cash never leaves your checking account if you get ripped.

The frustrating part is that it is almost impossible to track down the evildoer and beat him (her?) senseless.

i think they have various methods.

one would be separate charges within a short time frame and too much geographical distance to have traveled.

spending inconsistant with your current spending pattern.

most cards inserted in to a gas pump now require the users zip code. perhaps the thief gave the card to the attendant rather than using the auto pay and the attendant flagged it.

Dang! I got off easy. Sorry to hear that bro. But at least you got it back.

Mine was a debit card. So they should have had to use a pin#. I have o idea. But I cancelled all that. So we will see.

The good news is that you will not be held liable for the charges. This has happened to me a couple of times, and it is very irritating. In any event, your maximum liability under federal law is $50. Most credit card companies assume the full amount of the fraud and it is doubtful that you will even have to pay the $50 bucks.

So... no worries... :)

Wow, they did this on a true debit card??? I wonder how the heck they managed that? That IS scary...

Man that stinks....Sorry to hear about that

many debit cards can also be used as credit cards.

otherwise, i have no idea how they would have entered a pin.

I know that, but as the bolded part of my quote shows, TL says his was a debit card and they should have needed a pin.

This bothers me more than a little bit. I thought true debit cards were safer than this.

I had this happen to me a couple of months ago. The kiddie had managed to post over $1700 in charges in about an hour, mostly ordering things from various online stores. I called up the bank the same day and got all the fraudulent charges nuked. While they did open an investigation, they dropped it without discovering anything because none of the merchants involved ever presented the charges for payment.

It's a true PITA. Glad to hear yours worked out, as well.

Most debit cards also work as Visa cards. Hence, no pin. Many merchants don't even bother getting a signature for smaller purchases (for example, under $25).

Hey TL, sorry to hear about this, Bro.

With all the gas pump n' runs these days, most all stations have security cams. Get a LEO to grab the tape, and sync it with the time stamp of the charge, and you might come away with a tag number...

Glad to hear all charges were cancelled...

Morimotom: You are correct in that my card is both a "Credit" and a "Debit" card. So it could be used either way. I am not sure what a "true debit card" is though. Mine is both.

I will find out more soon I hope. I really want to know how it was used both times. Did they have my pin? My zip code? What raised the "red flag" to get my bank to suspend it?

SPXTrader: I was thinking the same thing. The times on the transactions are recorded so I am wondering if these gas stations had video cameras? I contacted the police dept. and they said the first thing I need is a letter from my bank regarding the fraud. So I guess we will go from there.

Anyway, so far it looks like no real damage was done. I am still a little nervous until I find out how much the first purchase was for. I hope it posts soon.

But it's not going to ruin our Christmas! :D

It probably had a visa or mastercard logo on it. If it did, even though it is a debit card, you can use it like a charge card.
