Saw a specialist this morning.

He was of the opinion I should have a colonoscopy.

I countered with my opinion that I held the pedophiles I'd worked with in higher esteem than the doctors I'd met lately.

We did not schedule the colonoscopy. In fact, he had a downright frown on his face when he left abruptly.

I, on the other hand, had had a $__t-eating grin on MY face the whole rest of the afternoon ( so far ). :p

I said it was off topic. Let me see if I can go find a knife picture to put up here.

Exactly my experience of late too..

For every diagnostic procedure done to mitigate a risk of undetected illness there is a cost.
Monetary and otherwise.

Like other insurance, it may not be worth the cost unless you have the misfortune to need it.
Everyone has to decide how much to pay to insure against what risk.

In this case there's a nonmonetary cost that can't be distributed among many like the monetary part.

Wonder what the doc would advise if he had to bear part of the "full price"?:)

should've offered him a deal:

he spends a week with your pervs before he recommends takin' you out to the surgery table. ;)

I would like to know what symptoms you had that led him to suggest a colonoscopy. Email me privately if you want. I have recent experience as an endoscopic technician and understand how you feel about doctors. I worked side by side with many and only respected a very few; liked even less of that number. Hope it's just a money hungry doc and nothing truly worrisome. I enjoy your posts and would like to see you stick around the Cantina for a long time.:)

Uncle ain't kidding! First knife I recollect buying after I got out of the hospital a year ago was a Peter Bauchop Alley Cat ( fighting knife ). Then I got a pair of CZ's and a CCW.

( BTW I left the CZ in the truck this time. )

PS: Pragitam, munk, and others - don't worry - I don't condemn all doctors and nurses. Just the ones who think they have a right to make the decision and force you into complying. And won't take 5 "NO!"'s for an answer.

Little Bro, if you absolutely must have one of these tests I would recommend swallowing a glass eye the day before.
Hopefully the fake eye will be looking out as the Dr is looking in. Then at least you can say that even though your arsehole warn't the first the Dr had looked at you at least had the first arsehole that looked back at the Dr.:D :D :D :D

But I would urge you to have the test as well as a PSA and a prostate exam.
These are two of the worst killers among men that when detected early can be cured completely.
It isn't worth taking a chance over.

Give 'em hell Rusty:D Glad to hear a doctor story that ends with you home and well at the end of the day.

Sarge

Prostate: within the last 6 weeks.

PSA - will ask the doc ( my regular one ) about it in a couple weeks when I see him.

Far as a colonoscopy, they recommend one every couple years beginning at age 50. I'm now 52. Will eventually get a second opinion which will probably be the same but will go along with it the next time.

............................

I'd been waiting for a chance to bite a doctor's head off for over a year though, and this one's attitude needed adjustment anyway. Whether he wanted it or not. In fact especially if he didn't want to hear it.

Next time Birghorka needs a puja done, send me over and I can just bite the goat's head off.
:D :D :D :)

I'm going to go when the good Lord says and how he says.

I am going to go in with my wife the next time she has to go see about the latest tests she had. The specialist told her what was wrong with her head but, isn't telling her what to do about it and I'm getting pi$$ed. It sure looks like to me that they don't want to cure anything. If they do, you don't come back and they can't suck any more money out of the systems that do the paying.

Good for you Rusty.:) ;) :D

Can't agree with Yvsa more...on both counts.
If there is a suggestive medical history or a family history of either colon cancer or prostate cancer the blood tests (PSA and CEA) are not a big deal, is a good place to start and are not unreasonable for 50+
As PatMc offered, send me an email if I can help.

Finally found pics of the Alleycat and Alleykitten off of the Beck's Cutlery site. A 12" Sirupati's blade ( Audrey, to be specific ) is just a hair longer than the Alleycat's blade on the top.

Now that I've finally got some appropriate knife content added, 'tis time for bed. 95 posts to go til the big 5K!

Rusty,

Suggest that you get it. I did not like the idea either, but my doc recommended it. I told him that orifice was designed for $hit to come out of, but not for entry!

He said one word: "Polyps." Look that one up in your Funkin' Wagnall.

The procedure was not so bad in that they gave me some kind of IV drip that made me so groggy that I did not care, nor remember very much.

I do remember this Soviet lesbian-looking assistant grinning when they wheeled me into the exam room. I dimly remember watching the video monitor of the pink cave with a few brown boulders. NO POLYPS!

DO NOT have them show you the insertion device before hand! DO NOT! In fact you NEVER want to see what they stick up there, trust me on this!

But when you get over 50 (I am 59) it is a good idea (sigh). Growing old is not for sissies. Did not mean that remark personally Rusty, just in general.

But growing old does beat the hell out of the alternative! Get the test.

Bill

The only thing worse than a proctologist with no sense of humor is a proctologist with a sense of humor.

Recently an doctor told me that an ear operation might help my hearing, but that it would be so traumatic that I would have to take it very easy. In fact to not lift anything that weighed over ten pounds for a period of at least two weeks.

I told him that would mean I would have to pee sitting down for that length of time.

He didn't get it, but the nurse started laughing and he just kept asking her, "What? What?" Maybe he has a hearing loss also.

Funny stuff. I'm due for another colonoscopy myself but have stalled it for a year. As Bill Marsh pointed out, they drug you enough so you don't remember much. Only read worry is a mistake on the part of the doc -- sometimes they poke a hole thru your guts and it's a direct line to the OR. But what the hell. I've been to the OR so many times one more trip won't matter. I know that's just what you wanted to hear, Rusty.

Did email Pragitam and Patmc.

I think I'll request the PSA and CEA done first - and then get second opinion from a Reno Dr. with a good reputation. Figure if I postpone it a month, I can eventually talk myself into it.

If it has to be, will have it done in Reno at Washoe, which is a trauma center and well equipped. Then maybe stay overnite in motel before driving home.

As I told an ENT's front desk, "You know how some events you remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard what happened for all the rest of your life?" She nodded. I said "I remember where I was when I heard JFK was shot. And I remember seeing the second jet crash into the WTC on 9-11 and the first thought I had was Why couldn't that have been St. Mary's instead, dammit!."

Rusty,

My father put off and put off getting that test done. He's no longer with us. Waited too long. He made me promise to get whatever tests I needed done. According to my doctor, since I have a family history, I get to start at 40 years old instead of 50! Yea! :D :( :grumpy:  :barf:
It IS worth the time for second and third opinions however. Get the best Dr. in the area, and for God's sake, don't go to Carson City
