OT Earthquake

What really disappointed me was the planets lining up not destroying us. Now I gotta wait on that big asteroid. Sucks. Come on global warming.

In seriousness, I too heard that same report and it even caused me momentary wonder. The fellow that mentioned the 2000 computer clock earth destruction summed it up very well.

and the moon when I was a kid was 93,000 miles from the earth and now it's over 100,000 miles I believe. That messes up the 1/8" per year thing I think :)
or I'm a lot older than I think I'm ..

you have to remember science is part fiction and part fact..
they maybe righter now than they use to be in yesteryears facts  :)
The distance from the Earth to the Moon varies between 360,000 Km (223,693 miles) to 405,000 Km (251,655 miles) depending on the position of the Moon's orbit. And it hasn't changed much since I was a kid, and I have more gray hair than you Dan ;)

OK Roger.... here's a thought for you. Warm up the polar regions just a tiny bit and two things happen. The polar cap ice melts (just a little), the snow on the land melts, and the rivers put more water into the sea. Both are sources of FRESH water. Both are happening right now.

Now.... in the Atlantic, there's a flow of water called the Gulf Stream Drift. Warm water from the Gulf travels up and over the Atlantic and keeps England and Norway warm. (Compare the latitude of England with Canada or even New York). That water sinks as it reaches the polar regions, because it becomes colder. Right so far? That water then travels back at sea bed level back to the Gulf. A huge convection current.

Now..... alter the salinity of that water by as little as 2% by chucking in fresh water from the rivers and melting ice cap..... and it doesn't sink! End of convection current. Gulf Stream Drift stops. England and North West Europe don't get warmed up. Result..... Ice Age again.

And now the scary part. Reduce that salinity by 2%, and it will then take between three to five years for that sudden ice age to happen. Snow and ice all year round. And we here in England freeze our B***S off ;)

Oh yes... and the Gulf gets warmer and you guys get more storms.

I'd rather wait for that asteroid.

OK - I owe an apology.

I JUST saw a segment on NBS News as they were speaking to an earthquake expert. He stated that the Earth's axis was in fact affected, not by the quake directly, but by the huge displacement of water when the seafloor shifted. It apparently nudged the Earth ever so slightly, but made no mention as to how much. They also announced that several new small landmasses have begun to appear as a result of the plate uplift.

When Krakatau blew, the eruptions lasted nearly a month, kind of like Pinatubo and Monserrat. Of the final 4 blasts, the largest was heard from 2000 to 3000 miles away (at least Australia anyway), and released over an estimated 150 Megatons of energy (the biggest H-bombs we have are about 20MT or 40MT). The shockwave actually bounced off the upper atmosphere and damaged buildings and blew out windows nearly 100 miles away. The tsunami created was an estimated 120 feet high and traveled the entire Pacific rim.

The ash reportedly dropped the average global temperature by just over 1-degree C for a period of 5 years, and, also led to some spectacular sunsets throughout Europe (according to my grandmother) and fell over the entire earth as it disapated. It's remnants have blown to smaller degrees since then. I think the last was sometime in the 1990's.

Rod,

Just a tiny little anomoly for you to work out. Melting causes a lack of displacement.

as I understand it, from the news and my educational background. The earths axis was shifted slightly. But as has been posted already, the earths axis shifts naturally anyway and it did not shift anymore than is normally exepted by the eco system. Therefore, nothing to worry about, unless your the worrying kind, then your screwed :D . Kinda wild in a geological sense, but not something any of us will notice, as far as we know anyway, we'll see.
On the other hand, the last estimate I saw said 63,000 dead. Holy crow.
I am astounded at the possible loss of life. I hope and pray that it isn't as bad as estimates make it sound, and am glad my folks and friends are on this side of the planet. Including all of ya'll.
For anyone over there who is reading this, God bless you and keep you. For the rest of us, how about we thank our respective saviours, and pray for those who are less fortunate. Scarey stuff that, we can all lose our quenching directions.

I feel for the loss of life, I really truly do. But what is starting to get my goat is that all these countries that hate us are now griping cause we aren't sending enough money and help. But yet they will still hate us. I am not talking about the people, just the gov's. We should help, I am not saying that at all. Just d@mn, nothing we can do is ever good enough.

I agree and whats more this is a rant at the Japanese goverment.

You see all these Land Crusiers and Hi-Lux pickups in these dust bowl countries, why? Well its ODA. Which basically means the Japanese goverment bribes a goverment official in some dust bowl like Afganistan or Sudan. They they give this 'Oficial assistance' in the form of loans that are really like gift certificates that you can only use for products made by Japan inc. Hydro power stations, can you say 'Mitsubishi Heavy Industry'?

They then tout in the propaganda, err I mean newspaper how much they have spent helping nations when, in fact, once you pull off the veneer its a blatent attempt to hawk their wares.

We have a real problem in Asia with this Tsunami. I didnt see Japan as a donator to helping. They didnt even help their own people in 97 when the big quake hit Kobe. It was the Mafia of all people that sent their soldiers to buy food, tents, clothes and fuel for the homeless. All free of charge!

Now the Japanese want a permanenet seat on the Security Counsel, what a joke! I wonder how many third world countries they have bribed to vote for them like they do with the Whale hunting issues.

It was in the paper the other month 'Egypt backs Japans bid for permanent seat' LMAO how much did that cost them?

McArthur was right. Treat every Japanese you meet like a 14 year old and you will do OK.

Sorry for the rant, but this really rubs me the wrong way.

Just read the BBC, looks like Japan is doing a Lions share...My bad :footinmou
