OT: Hawks

How am I supposed to puff myself up and look smart if that whippersnapper Coconut Monster keeps answering all the questions? And gives the right answer, even?! :D One more thing about 6150 is that it is a "clean" steel and has more controls over its manufacture than 5160. It is used in aircraft and other regulated parts. 416 is a low carbon stainless steel, although it can be heat treated.

No longer the HI imperial wizard of steels,

I have sampled the double bit in both steels and I couldn't tell a lot of difference. The main thing was the 6150, that he hardens himself, the first one I got was improperly hardened. I took it for a work out on an oak 2x4 and the edge flattened out. I sent it back to him and he did me a new one and it has really held up. Here's a field report on it:

Also here's a pic with it beside a Reeves double bit and the GB mini

Did some research on SAE 6150 steel

Carbon............... .50%
Managanese........ .80%
Silicon................ .30%
Chromium............1.00%
Vanadium............ .15%

Typical applications at various heat-treatments and RC:

springs
drill bits
chisels
punches
splines
screws
sway bars
rapier blades (fencing)
screw-driver bits
impact wrench sockets

It is said to have excellent impact resistance and good wear resistance.

Sounds pretty cool for hawks.

I got a Ft. Meigs Nessmuk from Ragnar a couple of years ago. I will also endorse him as a great guy to deal with, who gives very good value for the dollar.

I'm not sure what steel mine is.

Here's a picture along with a sheath I made for it. I've been using it for a couple of years and it probably shows.

NessmukSheath.JPG

The sheath is made from an old discarded heavy leather purse. It's one piece of leather folded over and tied on the sides. The top is open, and the bottom has a hole cut to slip the handle through. The top closure is of my own device. It incorporates a strap that was rivetted to the original purse. To close after the hatchet is inserted the strap is fed through the hole. Then the rawhide thong goes through a hole in the strap to prevent the strap from going back out the hole. The hatchet and sheath can then be hung by the strap.

OK, so it's not a quick-draw hatchet sheath!

I dunno, Howard. I'm not sure I can tell if that axe really belongs to you or not.

At a social function, I'd rather wear a double bitted axe on my chest instead of those stupid name tags. :)

Hmmmm. Next Khukuri Konvention. I see crossed "paper-cutters" over a red ribbon with the name "BruiseLee, Delegate from Somewhere"? :D

Naw.. my name tag would say, "Hello, my name is What you lookin' at?"

Unfortunately, no dice on the Ft Megs Nessmuk - Ragnar is waiting on the foundry, and the foundry is waiting on enough orders to do a pour. No idea when there will be more.

Oh, well. There are thirty other things there that I want. I'll just work my way to the Nessmuk over time. After a series of injuries from throwing an ultralight CS 'hawk I've been unforgivably negligent in my throwing. Some of Ragnar's 'hawks are probably exactly what I need.

Any recommendations? I've got my eye on the French Lady 'Hawk and the Viking Belt Axe for throwing, but something about the Woodland and Iroquois models is very much calling to me...can't really say what it is, but my gut's telling me to go with one of those first.

Francisca look interesting.

The bearded axe and the Adz are on my list of things to be acquired and stored before the wife finds them.

The woodland is more my style. I don't use the hawks for cutting threes, but instead for breaking branches. I could see using it for less than 6 inch trees for a primitive camping trip, For my needs I don't want one with a wide blade, but I do want one with what I think of a deep throat (shhhhh). If I was a handy metal worker I'd take down the width of the blade to an even two inches, just cause.

I want one that is long from the edge to the handle. I've used these in the past to lift dutch oven's off coal fires, and I really want it as my hawk is attached to my BOB, and I believe (completely without proof or evidence) that the narrow striking face and deeper throat would make it better for getting through the roof of a car or truck if I couldn't get out of a window,,,

There are several good threads in the hawk and axe forum, and a couple in WSS as well. A nice one in WSS about wok's, as a fat guy, food is very important to me...
