I am looking for a few whistles -- the store didn't have any left but I want to add them

Try a Fox 40 Mini whistle, no pea and you can't over blow it availible at most sporting goods stores. Also about 40 to 50 ft of military type 550 para cord.

Where do you get a bandana?
Western stores, Farm & Ranch Supply stores. Walmart, K-mart, ndn stores, any place that sells Carhart or similar clothing, just lots of places. :p

Two things I've added recently- BlastMatch firestarter. You can carry all the matches you want, but this thing is good for 1000's of starts. Just showing somebody how it works the other night, I lit a paperback book on fire. They were impressed. So was I.

Star-something signal mirror. You know the one, it has a little star in the middle for aiming. It's carried by space shuttle crews. Also, as a boater, this is a good thing to have aboard.

Bandanas- Cheaper than Dirt.com

Totally agreed about the first aid kits- make your own.

And totally agreed about the El Yucatero Green Sauce!

Luckily, we have cases of fresh MRE's kicking around for (future) emergencies or backpacking.

I can imagine you might be a bit tired of those by now. :(

Actually, the Lobster Newburg MRE is pretty good...

No, 80% of MRE's are lousy- spaghetti's OK, enchilada inedible, most in-between. I was tired of them by November... but there's a lot of poor people here, and they were still eating them months after the storm. I have some for insurance against further calamity.

Dinty Moore or Beef-A-Roni is preferred.

Used to strip my MREs and toss the heater pack, along with a lot of the other stuff. Then I finally discovered that some of the meals were edible if heated.

That heater starts getting pretty important when it's cold, if you don't have a pot of water to toss the entree into.
