News keeps telling us over and over the terrorism threat scale is at the second from highest level thoughout the X-mas/New Years period. Airplanes out of LA are grounded.

Just to stir things up, wondering how many forumites in the US have dedicated "Homeland Defense Rifles", or hunting rifles that could be pressed into interim service?

I know this is a knife forum, but I bet I'm not the only one to keep a rifle and/or shotgun handy with extra rounds to protect themselves and their family?

If you don't mind sharing it, tell us what's your choice.

Just somethng to break the monotony...

Rusty good post..............

I am a veteran. My first purchase state side was a Ithaca M37 extended tube, 18 " bbl, parkarize finish. The gun shop said it was for police sale only, but after I explained the law they said ok. I used this same weapon in the Teams.

My second purchase was a FNFAL, match grade, in the early 70"s. I bought an original ART scope after allot of BS. I had a State explosive license but gave it up after 9-11, too much grief. I am a "sleeper" ready to perform for my country.;)

Got called away to fix dinner.

Have an SAFN 49 and 200 rounds 7x57 173 grain ball like Karomojo Bell used on elephants.

Recently came into a 7.62x 51 NATO FN FAL. Will be my project to upgrade it when I get more money. Right now only have 2 20 round mags, and 140 rounds left over from my 40XB Repeater I had pillar bedded and set up as my Ma Bell ( reach out and touch someone ) gun.

Also have an 1100 12 ga. set up with synthetic stocks, extended mag ( pre-ban ). 50 rounds buck, 50 rounds slugs. My gunsmith wants to buy it off me. Nuff said.

Have more stuff, but that should do.

2 12 gauge Pumps One with no choke.
1 12 double gun no choke
.44 Mag 10 shot lever gun
.44 Maag revolver
.45 long Colt Remington copy
2 .22 Mag revolvers and Winchester lever gun
Numerous .22 lnog rifle weapons.
Barretta 380 Italian made 13 rds.
1 .380 PPK
and of course enough blades to do a job if I have to.

I don't really have any real long range stuff any more. However at 100 Yds. I have confidence in the lowly .22 Mag. with the 3-9x scope.:)

Well,

I remember I was really caught up in having the "best" firearms, some years ago. That's when Bud told me how he could stop a tank with a stick. I was thinking of some way to jam the road wheels or such, but he said,
With a stick, I can get a pistol. With that pistol, I can get a rifle... And so forth. It really is the user.

That said, I'm waiting on my G1 to be shipped back from WA state. The battalion NCOIC had me on details through the last day at Lewis, so I had a few unfinished details.

So, count me in with the FAL crowd...but, any weapon is a tool. It is dead without the user's spirit.

John

PS- Rusty, one of these days, I'm hoping to get a FN 49 as well, maybe in 8mm. Don't care for the M1 Garand, but the 49 feels good.

OK, say that the worst scenerio takes place. The "Terrorists" blow up some buildings in Washington, or maybe take down the Golden Gate Bridge, or set off a bomb at a New Year's Day football game.

Who exactly is it in Nevada, or Wyoming, or Tennessee, or anywhere else that you plan to shoot with your "Homeland Defense" weapons?

Maybe Osama Bin Laden's troops will march down Main Street, USA and the "Homeland Defense" weapons are to engage them in hand to hand combat?

I'm not against keeping or using weapons, but, looking at it realistically, they will probably be more useful against a neighbor or a relative than against some percieved "Terrorist Threat".

Well, Ben, I reckon defending your house is part of defending your homeland- against whatever threat.

For what it's worth, home invasions by groups of gang members, sometimes with body armor, have been increasing in the last few years.

Home invasions are probably going to be all of our biggest problems. No need for long range equipment for that. Buckshot does a wonderful job at under 40 yards. My house ain't 40 yards long. 2 or 3 shotguns loaded, & 2 or 3 Colts are probably enough.

Looks to me like Bura fan is going to have to hire a teenager to carry around all that metal.

I'd always fall back upon my M1A. Dont provoke me into starting a list, it'll be longer than BuraFan's... And my son's aren't old enough to carry that weight.

Note the body armor. A 2 3/4" 12 gauge Foster slug will not penetrate Level II- I know, I've tested it- at 10 feet, much less buckshot.

An autoloading rifle in .223, 7.62x39mm, .308, or .30-06 will penetrate Level II handily*. If you choose your ammo with just a little bit of caution and sense, you can get a round that will punch through the armor, make a helluva (technical term) mess inside, and not go on to penetrate 3 villages and Hillary Clinton.

*There are, of course, many other rifle calibers that would also work, just noting some of the most common. Basically, any centerfire autoloader will do the trick against Level II body armor, while not being over penetrative against even unarmored foes with correct ammo selection. If anyone has questions about which ammo, feel free to email me, or visit www.TheHighRoad.org.

Ben:

our town still has a Volunteer Fire Department. And a lot of folks with CCW's.
Do I have to draw you a picture?

:p ;) :D

( See, I did liven up the forum for a while, didn't I? Have fun and no biting or gouging! Merry Christmas, all! )

Well, I sold the SKS, Glock 23, Marlin 1895, KT P-11, Taurus .38, Taurus .22 Mag, and Mossberg 500 when I enlisted. :(

I kept a few, though. :D

I don't have one weapon dedicated to self defence.
6x55 swede for longer distances.
sks for spray and pray
shotgun for close up
pistols for backup
adjust and adapt.

I think my rem 870 would do just fine for now...

I'm looking forward to buying a DSA FAL later but even then, for home defense I would still grab my 12 gauge.

I think saboted slugs would penetrate more...

Didn't think anything could penetrate hillary clinton, not even her 'i did not have sex with that woman' hubby.....i've seen 3in. HE shells make very little impression on icebergs.

i'd vote for my 12ga. riot gun with alternating 00 buck & sabotted slugs, .45acp as backup. wish i had them in the UK tho, rather than back in cullman county, alabama.

i live right next to an RAF/US AFB where all the B52's were based for the IRAQ wars, one might expect terrorists to set up in the farms, woods around the perimiter with a few stingers if we go active again.

Ah, well at least i have my kuk's. maybe i can sneak up on them....

who's paranoid? even paranoids have enemies!

A couple of things. Barb was telling me that one of the terrorist targets, as well as the obvious big cities, is a little town across the river from Norfolk, VA. It's located across from a Navy base. It is a town of 2000 people and would be a coup for them as it is so close to a major military installation.

2nd, if I hit you with a 12 guage at short range, you are going to be on the floor looking up, whether you are wearing armor or not. And then you won't be around at all, shortly.
