OT: Homemade Firearm Cleaners & Lubricants - MSDS

Not withstanding John Powell's excellent advice there's some stuff listed here that will probably make my job a lot easier and without having to track them down when it comes time to clean my karda's and kukri's from Atlanata Cutlery!!!!!!!:D

ddean,
Thanks for the link...there seems like some good tips that I think I'll try at work. Like that homemade "foul-out" thingy. We've got some barrels in some of the parts kits that we build our V53's from that have really bad bores that we can't use as they are. If it works I'll let you know.

The foul out gadget works. I used it to remove the copper from a well used Yugo model 24. Got me right down to clean, very well pitted metal! Oh well, it did work :)

To clarify, the barrel was pitted from corrosively primed ammo, the foul out just removed the copper that was filling all the pits.

This seemed like an appropriate thread to insert this info on
cleaners & lubricants.

I was told when I was younger that OIL-OF-WINTERGREEN
is probably one of the best freeing lube's that is available, "

2- If anyone finds a way to clean silicone off of a surface they can make a fortune .... About the only way to do it is to remove the surface. ....it gets into every pore then comes out and destroys the bond on anything that you want to stick to it."

"troposcatter
if you do spill any silicones like brake fluid or other silicone lubricants use vinegar to mix up the cleaning solution instead of water, the acetic acid acts as a surfacant and lifts the silicone right up."

"jniolon
for all you lovers of wd 40.... here's your site the WD-40 fan club.... 2000 yes count them two thousand uses for wd-40 with at least 15 being the proper use...

"rbrendel
i have chrome rims on my truck and i wiped them down with wd40 and they blind you and still repel dirt"

"AOGDEN
try LPS brand products. They have cleaners, lubricants, & protective compounds. ....The best place to look is the Industrial & contractor supply houses. I won't even consider WD40 or Liquid wrench since I found LPS."

"renaldo
started using Breakfree. But they've changed the formula recently and now it's useless too. ........ Balistol. It's the German equivalent of Hoppes No 9 lubricant. ... It displaces water too, but it leaves behind oil. ...WD-40 works as a starting fluid is because its mostly kerosene. ......Don't use '40 on car locks either, it will screw up the paint under the lock where it will drip"

"Djoffroad
True, WD40 is just a cleaner. I like Tri-Flow for other lubriacting purposes like freeing up bolts and lubricating chains."

"XLTRANGER
wd-40. come to find out the company also makes "NIX" which is used to get rid of lice. i talked to one of the chemist, and he said that it is the same thing as wd-40, but just different ratios of this to that."

"BOSS_358
DW-40. It seems to absorbe moisture and usually starts to rust. For penetrating oil I use PB blaster."

"Tedster9
WD-40 ... The MSDS sez it is just highly refined kerosene. It's a solvent more than anything, and a good water displacement."

"64 f100
Best lubricant I've used is, One Lube. ...I prefer to put it on with a small paint brush,...........Kerosine is not available any more, just deisel fuel that they call kerosine. "

"Brian460
Aero-Kroil works wonders beter than PB Blaster. I usaully get mine at the Power Plants I work at, it is about the only pentrating oil used in them."

"crash104936221
a good word for the ZEP 45 ..... truck dash had dirt the windex or armorall would not touch ......ZEP'd the whole thing ...looks like new "

"Ghostrider304
You need to watch out for CLP also. This product has a solvent in it which is fine to use on weapons but was never made to be used as a lubricant on any other application. It just like WD-40 will start to eat up moving parts. The reason for the solvent in this product is to keep the build up of carbon to a minimum on heavy caliber weapons."
