OT Hunting License Rant

they are turning everything into parks up here too
in a way I see it because we as a whole just sit and complain about the woods
but don't do anything about it.
land companies buy up the land and cut the hell out of it, a lot of them are insurance companies. then it's years before it looks right again.
so the state buys up some land and Parks them.

the big land outfits have been gating entry to their land because we try to
limit their cutting. ( on the land THEY own) we as a whole (as in the ones that sold them the land in the first place) sit and complain,, it's money and greed, if the people could
get together. buy the land up an manage it, that would solve a lot Of.
"why are they doing this ??? questions. "

I say we ,as in the Maine people up here..I have a lot to say about this topic
but I hate typing. :grumpy:

You have brought up a good point Dan. Now I don't agree with a zero logging policy but I do feel logging is necessary to preserve the game and the forest. Game does better in edgeland and new growth for the most part. Forest fires used to take care of the problem but try to let a fire go unchecked and see what happens.

On to your idea. I've thought of it many times before, I just don't know how to make it work.

If every hunter, hiker, mountain biker, etc, donated $100.00 to a cooperative and the cooperative did not pay itself (as most do), we could buy the majority of large woodlands in Virginia. It would also create a large enough lobby to be able to pass land tax relief in the state.

Responsible logging under very strict rules and control would allow additional revenue to the group for more land and provide access roads.

Now.....why can't we get it done. I'm gonna take some heat for this statement.

Because the average Hunter, fisherman, hiker, backpacker, etc, in Va is a narrow minded, selfish, self centered son-of-a-bitch who can't see the forest for the trees(pun intended). We spend nearly $50.00 on hunting licenses each year, hundreds on equipment, and for many, hundreds more to belong to a club to hunt.
Will they shell out a hundred bucks a year to buy land....hell no. The excuses are with limits. I'm a little Short this month, I have to pay insurance, I am saving for a new rifle, my car needs brakes. All good excuses, but they can buy a case of beer a month or go out to dinner once a week.

This type of thought pattern gave us the assault weapons ban and instant background checks, sportsman's tax on knives (and everything else)

While most have the same mindset, most just won't participate at all.

End of rant

It's called forest management but the Bozzo's here don't have a clue..

in Sweden it work great and the logger gets 6 weeks off a year,
it could be done here to but greed will kill it just like the American brand chain saws
the Sweads and German's put money back into their logging future and Brands of Saws ..
it sux here because one wants a no cut law, one wants no clear cutting, all this came about with big bucks and greed the logger here won't even do what you're saying to save their own a$$ and jobs. they don't get paid enough anyway it's the companies that make the money.
it's sad.. you'll fine that most of the big land owners here are not even based in Maine so they don't give a rat's ass about us..they are as nice as the EPA and DEP makes them and that's it..

another thing that burns me is
there's land around here that all of us were free to hunt when I was younger
guys from all over and from out'a state, now those guys from out of state are selling their houses for big $$$ and
retiring and coming up here buying up the land we both hunted and posting it so we can't hunt it anylonger NOW THAT burns my ASS but it's thier's now, what I can I say??
we can't afford that here,,( to buy up big amounts of land. )
your co/op plan would work once started I think, so everyone could see it working.. but to start is the biggie.. I'm stopping ...........now
