Armed robbery target kills gunman, cops say Teen dies, brother booked in stickup

A teenager wielding a handgun was shot and killed late Friday near Tulane University by a man he was trying to rob, New Orleans police said, marking the second time in four days that a would-be criminal was killed in the act.

Police think the teen who was shot Friday, Micah Adams, 17, and his brother Darius Adams, 19, both of the 3300 block of Behrman Highway in Algiers, were responsible for a series of recent stickups in the University section of town.

Darius Adams was arrested shortly after the shooting, and police found a car idling nearby that they think was the brothers' intended getaway vehicle, police spokesman Capt. Marlon Defillo said.

Darius Adams has been booked with attempted armed robbery, but Defillo said he likely will face additional charges, possibly including murder, since he is accused of helping to commit a felony that resulted in a death.

The robbery attempt occurred in the 7400 block of Zimpel Street on Friday just before 11 p.m. The target of the robbery, a 34-year-old man whom police declined to identify, was leaving work and walking to his car when Micah Adams approached him with a handgun drawn, Defillo said.

The man produced his own weapon and fired at Adams, who was shot multiple times in the torso. Adams tried to flee but collapsed nearby. Emergency medical technicians pronounced him dead at the scene.

People shooting each other isn't pleasant, but at least the right person died this time.

It just goes to show you that sometimes some people should have some kind of firearm on them. The streets abound with punks. I hate that he lost his life, but i sometimes think that whiping out a street thug should be no more of an annoyance than stepping in a pile of dog poop. Cuss a few times, scrape the junk off your shoes in the grass, and go on with your day watching where you step.

I am 100% behind this, but something worries me---and yes I carry and would do the same!

Remember how everyone got car alarms and "the Club"--and then carjackings started? I just hope this trend (and by that I mean it being publicized) doesn't lead to robbers just blasting people in the back of the head....and then taking money.

Then again they probably do that anyway :(

I agree with you, Rob. Carjacking scares me more than being mugged as you have no where to go and no leverage for physical defense. However, i would imagine that better than 90% of the time a potential attack can be seen coming. There is something to what DIJ talks about in "sensing danger". I always find myself checking my surroundings. Sometimes we get into an awful hurry that can get us into real trouble. The proverbial "wrong place at the wrong time". I know it's probably offputting to anyone innocent, but anytime i even *think* that someone is approaching in a potentially violent way I puff out my chest, flex up a bit, and have at least some plan of getting to a weapon or fleeing. Better safe than sorry. Who cares if the guy thinks I'm a tough guy jerk. Maybe just one time in a thousand it will save my life. These punks aren't big game hunters. They want fat mice and sheep to snack on, not a bear that'll eyeball them down;)

Not everyone should be allowed to legally carry a firearm (of course i'm talking about crazies, criminals, and children), but if you were a crook would you take the chance of say 1 in 4 of your potential targets packing a glock. Or, hell, I wouldn't want to be shot with a cheapy .25 anywhere. Mugging wouldn't be such an easy job for me anymore.

My state probably has one of the highest rates of gun ownership of any state, and we have the lowest crime rate too. I'm not sure if the 2 are related since there's also not real rich areas and super poor areas compared to other states, and we have the highest home ownership rate and lowest per capita consumption of alcohol last I heard. But there's been more than a few criminals either shot during a crime, or run off before they could commit one with guns ;)

The only disturbing item in this report is what the authorities threw at the second robber later- accesory to murder?

There is a happy practise by the modern State to throw the book at you. I don't like this much. Yes, I understand why, but it is leaves the realm of common sense in many cases.

I hear you brother munk. In this case it seems appropriate usage of the felony murder law, but the zero tolerance mentality does worry me. There's a tendency toward if you can't nail the 90+percent that get away with it, punish the one you catch for everything.

That would sure give the ones still out there reason to make sure they don't get caught - by leaving no witnesses.

But then a thunderclap and a brilliant light from above didn't transfix me and annoint me the ultimate arbiter of everything. Of course sometimes I think I should have the job...

It's just pissant- ism. Here's modern law enforcement- in bed with the drug laws and enjoying property confiscation. Or how about the Ca highway patrol? Lobbied against loaded guns in cars and won- like 50 years ago. Tinted glass in Ca? No way- it impedes the ability of LE to see where you are. I've always thought Ca would do best to put everyone in a cell. Call it free housing. Provide child care too.

The Modern State has, at its root, the premise that everyone is guilty of something at some time. If you pass enough law, everyone usually is.

When I start thinking that way it's usually time for my medication.

That's the way it is because that's the way it is. I managed to demolish several windmills before getting stabbed in the back because I didn't have someone like you standing back to back with me.

You don't have to like reality, you just have to live in it.,

Yes Rusty.

And just think, you can get a red square from the Morally Superior at any time for the slightest transgression.

It would be different in Commiefornia. The headlines would read something like this:

"Vigilante shoots teenage on his way to school. Police arrest alledged shooter who probably has neo-Nazi ties. DA to file murder charges on shooter. Lawyers for teenager's family filing suit against neo-Nazi claiming violation of teenager's civil rights."

And if it happened the other way:

"Man shot and killed by underprivileged child. Local politicians speak out against gun violence and ask that all citizens(themselves excepted) turn in their guns. Guns cause crime. Family of underprivileged child to file lawsuit against gun makers for putting guns in the hands of children and causing death and mayhem in their community."

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Careful- the Morally Superior will give you a red square for talk like that.

Everyone knows the shooter would be given a weapons charge and released...perhaps only a little later than the second accomplice gets out on bail.
