OT: Kid's Cereal and Happiness

Advertising has changed so much in the last bunch of years. I think the cream of wheat box had some guy who seemed to be pleased to be giving you a bowl of the stuff. Now we have a couple of guys breaking someone's guitar for singing about juicy fruit gum.

I remember him vaguely. He was wearing a white chef's apron, wasn't he, and kinda fat? Yeah, from the heart of a fat cook, here is what's best, ( and he should know) here is your warm bowl.

My Dad still eats Cram of Wheat from time to time. I always thought the dude on the box was Chef Boy-ar-dee's cousin or something.

Co-co wheats are still around, too.
I think they've got a little brown monkey in a ball cap for a mascot now, though.

Lion's Roar- the old B&W Popeye's from Fleischer Studios were the BEST! :D

I've always liked either corn flakes (frosted when they came out) or rice crispies...but the thing was that I had to have fruit in it. Bananas, berries, raisins, peaches...whatever was in season (ha! In season...there's something you don't have to worry about any more!). Nowadays it's the same...or buttered toast (rye by choice)

Mmm... cream of wheat... Haven't had that in a while. Growing up, that used to be the special, Saturday morning treat:

A big bowl of "raisin soup" with a handful of assorted dried fruit, brown sugar, milk and a fat dollop of butter. Good times.

Cereal-wise, my parents wouldn't allow "sugar" cereal, but Honey-Nut Cheerios was okay. Go figure. :)

I guess my kids grew up on that sugared cereal after I was gone, my grandson's specialty is cooking the large Gran's Sweet Rolls for breakfast.;)
I couldn't ever get ready for some of the cereals mentioned as when mixed with milk it just looks so damned gross!!!! :p
I did have a weakness for Tony the Tiger and the Sugar Frosted Flakes however. They are Grrrreeeeaaatttttt!!!!!!! :D
Can't eat 'em anymore though, too much sugar. It would be nice if they coated some of the cereals with Splenda, gotta Love that Stuff, all the taste and None of the Calories!!!!

And I still eat Cream of Wheat fairly often,
'specially in the colder months. I also eat a lot of Oatmeal as well as Malt-O-Meal which I don't think has been mentioned, remember that?
We bought some groats a while back but Barb hasn't fixed them yet, probably forgot about them. It's s'possed to be cool in the morning, perhaps a good thing for breakfast tomorrow.:)

Groats are a less milled form of oat which when left al dente gives a little crunch in the spoon. Good Stick to Yer Rib's Goodies!!!! :D

Lion's Roar & Machete,

I completely forgot about the old B&W Popeye's.....came on while eating breakfast before going to school...and had the cabin door's on the ship / boat open & close with the credits? Wasn't that before Olive Oil came in and messed everything up? Just the guys getting in fights; eating burgers and following that dog thing all around.....gees, what was his name...kinkachu, smedley? He could disappear and reappear at will?

His name was Eugene, and he wasn't a dog, he was an extra-dimensional creature called a Jeep. (Yes, the vehicle took its name from him, not the other way around.) He could predict the future, and "disappear" by entering another dimension and he ate only orchids. IIRC, he was captured in Africa by Olive's adventurer uncle.

And that, my friends, is probably more than you ever wanted to know about Popeye. :p

bruise, you are a funy funny man.

but you guys dont know good cereal until youve eaten and entire box of fruity pebbles!

fruity pebbles rock!

oh lord, i bet i gained 8 pounds cause of barny rubble.

Fruity Pebbles are just the "doughnut holes" from Fruit Loops.

I see that Tony the tiger is has a more athletic shape than when I used to eat his product. I remember him to be sort of fat and shapeless. I'm half expecting to see Snap, Crackle and Pop decked out in some "bling, bling" the next time I watch tv.

The best cereal prizes came in Shreddies. The rubber band powered boat was the best. I wanted one for years and finally got one when we visited Grandfather's place for the summer. I wish I still had it. I'd probably bathe more if I did.

Does anyone drink that vile fluid known as coffee? I like the smell but never been able to get used to the taste. :barf:

Bruise I still drink coffee, just not as much as I used to. Barb still swills the stuff though. If Barb couldn't have her morning caffiene fix I would be in fear of my life no matter how much she loves me!!!! :( ;) :D

Give me a chance to sleep in and then run down to the local bakery and get the last of the donuts boxed up for $3.50 a box - maybe 15 or 16 donuts if you're lucky. Maple icing over cake donuts. FRESH donuts!

:D :D :D

There's an Irish coarse-cut style oat that is little more than the oats quartered. Really good!

Bruise, had no idea abt the froot loops/fruity pebbles continuum (gotta like a word with two u's in it, like continuum' or "vacuum")

Believe it or not, I used to be in the Upright Citizens Brigade and I did standup comedy in New York.
the standup was tough, but the UCB was my one true love.

I had a room mate who called it "bean water". I have always loved coffee. I've been drinking it without moderation since I was sixteen. I might be six feet tall now if I hadn't. ;) I know a lot of people for whom it is an "aquired taste" and quite a few who, like you, love the smell but can't stand to drink it. I worked in a "gourmet" coffee shop for a couple of years, and it was funny to see how many people would walk in, take a deep breath, and then leave without buying anything. I'd smell like coffee after a day at work there, and the results were better than any aftershave or cologne I've ever used. Yeah, chicks were diggin' me. :D ;)

Well, I was born in '88 so I never got to see "Frankenberry", "BooBerry" or even..."Freakies?". I remember me and my sister laying in our sleeping bags in front of the TV eating a bowl of Count Chocula at night watching "Dinosaurs". I've since somewhat outgrown my love for Fruity Pebbles, Trix, Captain Crunch, etc. I eat more wheat, nuts, raisins kinds of cereals now (rarely too, I don't eat breakfast anymore). I remember the best cereal toy EVER to be a Trix cereal mini chalkboard with chalk. Perfect for those tough tic-tac-toe competitions :p . Of course, we don't get real toys anymore. You damn 60's kids and your sweet Cracker Jacks and cereal toys. If we're lucky, we get a sticker. I can't eat Smacks cereal anymore without my dad telling me every time "They used to be "Sugar Smacks"...back before they started tasting like ass" or something to the like :D

The worst sugar-cereal ever is Oreos O's :barf:

I like Frosted Flakes, I also like adding strawberry syrup to the milk of corn Flakes. Lucky Charms are also awesome, as are frosted mini-wheats.

Also: I love coffee. I used to get it every Saturday at my dad's work. It has to be strong and black, there's nothing worse than a weak cup of coffee or one with creamer. I don't drink it nearly as often anymore, but that'll change in college and when I get a job. Just as long as it's not....Starbucks.

Rusty knows the good life. I love Maple toppings. I will get a box of Vermont Maple candy about once a year. I haven't been able to find any good Maple syrup though.

Coffee is a morning requirement for me, I don't get going very easily without it. My favorite is the old fashion chicory root coffee, that my Grandfather used to have. Haven't found anything quite like that either.

Anyone ever have dandelion coffee?

Lion's Roar- I think I recall Tom Brown mentioning coffee as one of many uses for dandelion. Haven't tried it though.

We sold chickory in the above-mentioned coffee shop- either by itself or mixed with french roast for "New Orleans" style coffee. I am told that most places in "Nawlins" still cut coffee with chickory.

Whenever I am charged with procuring the donuts for any occasion, I always make sure there are one or two maple-frosted for me. Good call, Rusty and LR. ;)
