OT kinda....Tomahawk in military...

Drat! I just read the article and was going to post a link to it here. Got beaten out.

The Hawk Talk forum has been gushing over those State of the Art weapons for some time. What the article did not mention, was price.

Unbelievable. You could buy a firearm, or two or three Khukuris for what one of thos super duper hawks sell for.

And I can't get over the cutting surface- very small. I'll take a khukuri any day.

Almost forgot- did I see any mention of the Vietnam era hawks?

Munk, don't know if you saw it or not;) but there was mention and a few pics of the Vietnam era hawks:

"Prisco's revitalized firm sells several different tomahawk designs, mainly to sportsmen and collectors. But he said that among members of the military, the top-selling product is the Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk, which uses LaGana's original head design and an updated synthetic handle. LaGana died in 2002 after a battle with cancer."

I have to agree with you on the price issue though. I'll stick with khukuris.

I almost got an ATC Vietnam Tactical last year, but a 16.5" Chiruwa found me first. I was looking at tomahawks and kukuris last year and decided on a tomahawk, but I held an HI first and went with them. And personally I would go with a Chiruwa or 18" AK or WWII over a tomahawk. They seem like a better tool to me.

But I still want a Vietnam Tactical. And the price is not much more than an 18" AK from the shopping site(this excludes Uncle Bill's Deals though:D). They are only about $20-$25 more depending on where you look. Of course, I am sure the RMJ Tomahawks are more.

I have khuks and hawks. I wouldn't want to try chopping down a concrete block wall with any Hawk I have ever seen. With a khuk either for that matter. I made an axe once that has a very thin blade that cuts better than my double bit axe but, it isn't quite heavy enough to get rid of the big axe.

The hawks I have from Ragweed are light and sharp enough to be pretty mean weapons. The hawks used during the Revolutionary war wouldn't chop through concrete blocks either. But then a skull doesn't know the difference. I'm sure many of them got their crack at a gourd or two. I love my khuks but, I don't think I'll get rid of the hawks real soon.

In case any one wonders, I have weapons all over the place handy to get to if needed. My wife knows where most of them are and is used to them by now.:)

Pappy,

Well a 'hawk isn't an axe. If I need an axe, I want an axe, not a 'hawk or a khuk. But there's khuks that come closer to performing like an axe than 'hawks do from what I can tell. The catch is, those khuks are big and heavy like an axe. I do feel that a khuk is less likely to injure one with careless use than a 'hawk. This is from my experience with hatchets. I haven't seen so far that a 'hawk is worth spending my money on instead of another khuk, since I'm mainly interested in the "toolness". Khuks seem more vesatile to me.

I agree that either would do a job on a skull.

Don't care much about concrete blocks, I have a couple of hammers. They will deal with concrete blocks as well as most hand tools.

I can tell you though, when the back door is open for venilation when I'm cooking in hot weather there's a khuk hanging past the edge of the kitchen counter that can't be seen from the open back door. :)

For me I've got a 16.5 inch Chiruwa AK, it mainly sees the ungodly heavy work. I have an ATC hawk with the wood handle, that only sees light butchering work. I like both, and both will do jobs the other can't. What puzzles me is the replacing of e-tools with the hawks. I know that e-tools are pretty flimsy lately by some accounts, but the only way that I see the hawk helping make any type of fighting hole is to use the spike to break the ground, then move the loose dirt with your hands.

But one thing's for sure, khuks and hawks both have good records of laying the enemy on his back.

Brend makes a cool hawk. Still would go with the khukuri. Hawk would be better for throwing but just watch Duvon on the convention tape. He makes a good sell for the khuk.

One more and I will quit for a while.

I have a CS battle axe and when I finally got it sharpened up the way I wanted it. By choking up on the handle jusst behind the head it worked pretty good as an Ulu?. Cuts the veggies pretty darn good.:)

I was just about to buy a Hawk when I happened to wander into HI. I never got the Hawk.

A funny thing just happened, when I came to the forum, I was not recognized by the program and had to log in. I didn't know my password any longer as I haven't had to do that for a year. So I got a new password, but still had to log in.

anyonelse getting strange stuff?

You might have deleted the file on your computer that had the login stuff for bladeforums on it.

that happens to me every time I clear out my cookies(er? biscuits? er thingies that track you?) to attempt to speed up the puter. That's why I use "superfragilistic" as a password...makes it easier to remember.

happy trails.

(er...no I don't use that...really...honest...just kidding)

I purchased one of these last year for a relatively little amount of money. I was very impressed with the workmanship and overall design. For a modern rendition and for a forged blade, it was very impressive.

However, while I used it a couple of times, it was never the multipupose tool that I have in my Chainpure "villager" Khukuri. The carying system was rather cumbersome, the 'hawk itself is rathe large and unweildy to carry, and as has been mentioned, the cutting surface is pretty small. Mine had a backspike, so a a weapon, it was a pretty formidable piece.

Still and all, I sold it a few months ago, and I still have my abbreviated collection of Khukuri. (By the was, is Khukuri both singular and plural..really would like to know?)

I also don't think that a Tomahawk has the reach and versatility as a weapon compared to a good combat style Khukuri like a Cheetlangi or Kobra.

Now, I wonder what my new "Movie Model" is gong to be like?

OK, I've read it by the author, I've heard it, and now see it as the tag on the bottom of your posts: Deathdancer, who wrote; 'Only accurate guns are interesting." ?
