60 million buffalo were farting and belching all over the place and it doesn't seem to have affected things adversely all that much.

Slightly difft. digestive system. Slightly difft diet. Also at that time there were no cars or coal fired power plants.

Classic tree hugging environmentalists and native rights do not always agree. Had a number of native professors this past year. While very supportive of the environment, they did see a number of flaws in "environmentalist" views of conservation that negates the human right to live. Extreme Green sides would decimate many indigenous populations if their policies were enforced. Slash and burn farming is not the same negative as some would have you think. Anyways, there always seems to be a tendency for gloom and doom in certain sectors. I understand the feeling, trying to motivate when there is no progress, but sometimes it feels like we take two steps back for every one forward. But then there is no real unity in what environmentalism means. Conservation vs pastoralism. Do humans exist in this equation. While Im not the most liberal of people, one native professor really had a big impact on my thinking. One flaw she pointed out in classic environmentalism is that it is still based on a Western concept of nature in which humans are not part of the environment. Is that really what we want? A nature preserve where we do not exist?

"based on a Western concept of nature in which humans are not part of the environment" Does not come from the west, it too is a concept imported form the East under the guise of "Christianity"

Some folks took the bible quite lieterally in thinking that all the plants and animals were here fer the killin by humans, god's chosen folk.

I my western tradition, even littering is frowned upon, and certainly wanton destruction is opposed. I bet Yvsa and I would see abt eye2eye on many conservationist issues.

Of course, Fed, your point is waay valid. If folks see themselves as outside the eco system, how will they act in it again? We been domesticated fer too long...
