OT:Look what is happening to our vote

then there's the story they aired the other day on NPR about when they "beta-tested" these machines by letting a handful of hackers individually (and separately) attack them. The last one was in at the 90 minute mark, and the first one had compromised it in only 30 seconds......yikes!

That's a shame, cause we used them last 2 elections and I really liked them. Way easier for the dyslexic to hit the right place than the punch card.

not sure which side of the fence I stand on with this...both sides suck....but only because of people with poor common sense and lack of integrity...

Having used all the various kinds of machines I know of I liked the computerized ones the best. I do like the idea of a paper ballot being generated at the same time in case it is contested.

However all methods are open to tampering and of course the fact that the person who raises the most cash winning is even more of a problem for me than potential vote tampering. The internet makes it easier, but for me, as a voter it is real time consuming to run down some of these allegations put forth in negative ads and determine whether there is anything substantive to them.

yes...campaign financing does seem to weigh in rather heavily...but what do we care? Our vote is not "intelligent" or "educated" enough to really count, right?

It is very naive to think that we needed a machine to fix ballots. Its been done since day one without them. It is naive for us to think only other countries rig elections.

Hey, and if ya abstain from voting (even if all US voters did), the Electoral College is there to make a decision for ye!

Pendentive raised the real threat- it's not the record, which they'll have, but the tampering.

Ever wonder how many dead ndn's in North Dakota voted for Clinton, or how many tombstones in Chicago are still alive?

I have a buddy who didn't vote, and according to the law if you miss two elections without voting, you have to re-register. He went to vote last election, and found he didn't have to register because he voted.

Another friend in his Discordian Society days cast a silly ballot for all of the underdogs. When the counts came down, his votes miraculously were not where he had put them.

ANY system that controls money or power will be used to control money and power, by those rich and powerful seekinng to be more rich and more powerful.

Anybody remember the Ross Perot running, where he sorta dropped out of the running? I think the powers that be were afraid to have a rich successful businessman in office that couldn't be under their thumb. He was already rich and powerful, so how can ye bribe a guy like that? Was he threatened to move on? I'm sure there's an "Offical version" somewhere on this.

I agree with you.

Think about this. Dean raised tons of money. 80% of his funding came from private individuals who donated $200 or less.

In all primaries for years before whatever candidate raised the most $$ won the primary. But not this time.

So we know Kerry, who I favor over Bush was given pretty much a free ride by the press, yet Howard Dean got total scrutiny by the press and I think disproportionately so.

So were they giving Dean the shaft cause what he said was any worse than the others? Or was it the same reason that Keith brought up about Perot. Since he didn't get his money from the same source as Bush, Kerry et al, he couldn't be counted on to jump when the corporations said when??

there are some Discordians floating around. Ever read the Illuminatus Trilogy? Funny stuff but it makes you think. It's all about secret societies, double agents and plots within plots. Maybe not as absurd as it sounds.

I've heard of it. Never read it. Ever read The Book of the Subgenius? :D

Whoever wrote that book had to be a scholar of world religion with a very juvenile sense of humor. They draw on Gnosticism, Hinduisim, the Book of Enoch, etc. A great read, and profound in ways if you read around the BS.

Cleanse, fold, manipulate, lather, rinse, repeat!:D

I've talked to many of my staunch Repub. friends, and one said this to me:
"I wish Clinton was on the ballot"

Me too. I want an ignorant, non-controlling face man up there. There's plenty of conniving behind the scenes already. ]

Some of my 'conspiracy' sources tell me that since the 20's Organized crime syndicates have been buying up huge segments of the US govt (in capitalism, can you really think that there is something that cannot be bought and sold, such as loyalties?). You can buy lobbyists, why not congressmen, senators, etc?

Now, switch over to Russia, right after the collapse of the Iron curtain. Now, I'm sure there was a "Power vacuum" for about 2 seconds, then the guys still holding the $$ (organized crime, drug Tsars) BECOME the govt. They're the only ones qualified to run the show, and they've been doing it for so long behind the scenes anyhow. Notice how no military commanders seized power or started trouble--why? Because the power structure in place behind the puppet gov't just stepped out of the shadows, more publicly assuming roles they already were the gate-keepers for. Sure, russia's old govt tried to wage war on the crime syndicates, and about that time they figured it was time to "buy out" what they could of the oposition.

Also explains why they're hog-wild over capitalism now, but it "just wouldn't work" before. They were quietyl colecting the gold outta sight, so sure, "Communism is great!" Now, they stand little to gain by sharing the wealth too much, but -- taxes! The original blood/protection money!" A few quick calls to their mob buddies here int he US, and they're reassured that things can work out well for them.

Whatch out, HD..there may be "Pinks" all around us. I'm still trying to achieve 'slack.':D

Frank- Yes, and ther was a game based on the Illuminatus stuff that was actually pretty fun! Also read Rob Anton Wilson's _Reality is What You can Get Away With_. Chexck that one out if you can find it, it is a masterwork of the late 20th c, and a commentary on what he calls "the Age of Bull5hit."

Discordians--I got a pile of cards form a Discordian from the temple of Eris, they read:

"The carrier of this card is a genuine and authorized POPE, so treat him right" Then there's some Eris temple stuff @ the bottom. I love to drop them in those "win a lunch with yer business card" bowls at the front of eateries. I wonder how many Popes have eaten fer free?:D

Heehee. The band Sublime used a pic of Bob Dobbs on one of their CDs, and listed him inn the credits.

I think you got the Crux of the matter, with the inclusion of the
brain wash the media delivers to the populace as a whole.
I read some where that democracy was finished when people discovered they could vote them selves money or something like that. I think it is true , now you just have to ask yourself which people you want to have the money and at what expense( in terms of other resources/opportunities the future ....etc).

an interesting thought, In a capitalist society the capitalist rule.....Ie corporatons. That is where I think the next battle will be fought

and my wife's an Ordained Minister in the Church of the Subgenius. I've got the Principia Discorida sitting on my desk at work. I'd have to rank the Hitchhikers Guide right up there with the profound absurdity (or is it absurd profundidty?) of Illuminatus and the Subgenius. Hail Eris! All hail Discordia! Fnord.

Frank

Lord! You mean there's other people out there who read this stuff besides me?? Ten years or more and I've never run into anyone who had and here on a KHUKURI forum there's two others?? I LOVE the internet! ;)

Perhaps you were thinking of the following quotation from Alexander Fraser Tytler, economist and professor at Edinburgh University, writing at the time of the American Revolution which is instructive:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse (generous benefits) from the public treasury.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world’s great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back into bondage.”
