just in case, get some smaller pieces and make a set of "knives of the world" handles for him. He'll get to use them more often, they will be much easier to craft, and you can introduce khuks, seax, scot's daggers, theater knives...etc., to him.
Years ago I tried to make a stock for an old Lefever sxs 12 guage. Granted, I have no skill, but this thing ended up as a poster child for wood abuse.
Enjoy, and count your fingers before and after. The number should remain the same.
