OT (maybe not): Tolerance

Physicians are not magicians. They are technicians like auto mechanics or computer techs. The difference is that they work with more complex mechanisms.

But like anyone else, they have a 50/50 chance of diagnosing the problem correctly, and the same odds that they will repair it properly.

Just because they charge high rates is no reason to expect that they have a high level of competency.

I got hit head-on by a truck while riding my motorcycle.

The orthopedic surgeon and the radiologist spotted the break in my arm and bound it, stitched the gashes in my legs, kept me overnight, and sent me home, INSISTING that I get physical therapy for the arm/shoulder for many months.

So I did. $100 a shot, twice a week, for three months. I literally cried each session...thought I had developed a low pain threshold.

Local General Practitioner said "that's not right." Insisted on an MRI, there and then. Upon learning the results, he was WHITE with fury!

Turns out I had a dislocated shoulder, and the humeral head (the knobby part at the end of the bone) was split and was lifting and then dropping with each movement. By the end of the day, he'd made an appointment with Univ of Wisconsin surgeons, by the end of the week I was in surgery, by the end of the surgery I was no longer in tears.

So?

Well, the radiologist and the first ortho guy missed OBVIOUS stuff on the X-rays (I have them), the local GP listened, checked...and was conscientious.

First two: Not good. GP: good. How do you know? crap shoot if you have an accident

(By the way...the malpractice insurers have a "scorched earth" policy. They will hire every expert, use every delaying tactic, and prolong and increase the expense of a law-suit to the point that any attorney you might want...will not accept the case unless the surgeon's glasses have dropped into the cut he made and show up on the X-ray...and even then...they may reconsider.)

But this is a specific case....

Generalities are only true in general.

I have no doubt of that.
I've seen and heard awful things that support that view.

And I did not intend to put Rusty down as a person.

If it came across that way I offer my
=most= sincere and abject apologies. :footinmou :o
I'm sorry Rusty.

I've kept my mouth shut in the past.
But somehow, being in a thread on tolerance,
and being as tired as I was,
and visualizing someone 'carrying' to my wife's office,
I felt a need to defend my wife and other 'good guy' docs.

I worked in a hospital for several years as a technician
and got to know many docs 'behind the scenes'
when patients were absent or unconcious.
I see docs now from an 'inside' position as physician's family.
Some were/are exactly every bad thing said here & elsewhere.
Others were just 'doing the job' the same way many people 'do the job' because that's the job.
Others cared deeply about the patients and caring for them.

Unfortunately, she couldn't.
She takes such comments to heart, very personally.
And feels much hurt from it.

While I can't speak for anyone else, I clearly perceived your intent as soley one of defending the medical profession, not of insult :)

However, if you wish to give Yosem... errrrr Rusty some unmitigated grief. Please allow me to give you a few pointers :D

'Course Rusty has had some kind words for me too ;)

I don't think Rusty meant any evil intentions, just venting frustration. I can sort of relate, if I really did have a disintegrating ray gun there'd be a lot less annoying drivers on the road. Thankfully, there's no such thing, as I've surely been one of 'em myself from time to time.;)

"I vent, therefore I am."

Me too.

And I know Rusty's one of the good guys.

It's just that some buttons got pressed to put
me into protective mode RE my family.

Thanks, Rereading it, I think it conveyed that properly.
But written words often get misread in posts.

Sorry to everyone for having unintentionally hijacked the thread.

I'm done. No more.
