OT Mil surplus guns

I do. From M44s to 91/30s.... Enfields to Mausers. They all have a home here. So long as they aren't Bubba'd. You khuk guys imagine seeing a WWII Khuk on Ebay that someone had ground out the cho making it smooth. That's bubba'd.

BTW- Most 7.62x54R is corrosive. Just swab with windex after shooting and you'll be ok. Don't wait to clean til the next day.

It takes all types to make a world, doesn't it? ;)

But sometimes some of the types just aren't our type. :D

PZ93C - Do you just spray that windex onto a cleaning patch and use the cleaning rod? I imagine that I would have to watch the poly that I have on my M44 with that stuff. Sounds like you collect what I'm interested in, the classic bolt actions of the World Wars. I think next on my list is a 91/30, can't get over that 2000 meter sight. A M38 would be nice so that I won't have to have a deployed bayonet while firing.

Correct Semper Fi.

Also-- to force a man to DO what he does not want merely because you believe it will be good for him.

There's my business-your business--and GOD's business and many in their eagerness to limit or restrict freedom have trouble distinguishing which is which. ;) :D

2 ak 47's 1 sks,2 german mauser's,1turkish mauser,1 garand, 1 M1 carbine, 1 fn fal, 1 ar 15, 1 enfield, 1 swedeish M96, 2 M44's, 1 91/30, 1 steyr 95 8.56 cal, 1 french semi auto rifle 7.5, 1 french bolt action 7.5, 2 model 48's, 1 enfield jungle carbine. There might be more, I havn't looked in my gun safe in awhile. I don't shoot anymore I just collect.

.30 cal patch and run it through. Or take a bottle with you to the range and spray into the action, with the barrel pointed down, til the windex comes out. BTW get the bolt face too. It's the primers that are corrosive. Personally I love to extend the bayo and blast away. Of course, they ask if I'm going to hand to hand the target.

That windex won't touch your poly. If you want that poly off, you'll need a chemical stripper. So don't sweat that.

Are you close to a Big 5? 91/30s are on sale 79.99. They usually stock M38s as well. Big 5 Stores Is there one near you?

It's great to finially have a minute to check the forum. Think I'll jump in...I have Swedish mausers, long and short versions; an SKS, Russian made; and a 1903 Springfield, 30/06. That covers my hunting needs. I was amazed at how well the Swedish 6.5mm shoots...very well made.

I totally agree on the Swede's.

I've never shot a more perfect round than the 6.5X55 and would not hesitate to use it up to, an including, elk. It is the complete and ultimate deer slayer.

The recoil is so mild that you can shoot until your pocketbook tells you to quit unlike the 8mm's so prevalent on the current scene. About a dozen 8mm rounds and that's enough.

I'm particularly fond of the Carl Gustav's and the Oberndorfs made around 1900.I haven't been able to afford a Husky yet. They're still a great bargain in the $200.00 range with all matching SN's. One way to find what's currently available is to type "swed" in the search box over at auction arms.com.

I have yet to own a Swede that had other than a mirror pristine bore.

Clearblue, after I bought the first one, my son liked it so much he wanted one for his birthday. So I ordered one...$80.00...it came still in cosmoline. It had been fired once to tally the zero and that was it; not a dent in the stock and 100% on the bluing. Great birthday gift.

I'm envious. That Francis Bacon quote applies as I would love to be able to, shall we say, enhance my collection with several more. The best I've been able to do is 189.99 on the originals plus shipping- from SOG and SARCO.

I have been able to acquire a couple sporters with the RamLine stocks that are just the ticket for field use. The biggest problem is deciding which one to take out as they all shoot so good.

If you ever get into the Miami area stop by Samco's office and take a look at the Persian M98/29's unissued. But we're talking 500+ on those.

Samco is where I got the one for 80 bucks. It was about six years,or so, ago. Yes, the price has gone up. I should have bought a dozen when I had the money.

#1 - If your government doesn't want you to have one, there's probably a darned good reason for you to have one.

#2 - As a patriotic american, it's your duty to have the means to tell the gfvernment "NO!" and make it Stick.

#3 - and Finally, your first gun only has to be good enough to get you your second gun.

This is an interesting thread.

I've been interested in buying a rifle. I was around several firearms as a kid, and fired a great many. But sadly, those people are all gone now. Thankfully the net is a great source of info.

I'm really partial to semi-auto rifles, and i've always liked the SKS. They seem to be pretty cost effective, for something like a Yugo... Being that i live in NY i won't get to shoot very often, so ammo cost isn't a real big worry.

I've also considered Ruger 10/22 or mini-14 rifles, because they are available here locally and cheap. Somehow i feel a .22 would'nt thrill me much, we had those in high school. Compared to what i was used to shooting, the .22 rifles felt like pop-guns or airguns.

My concerns in buying focus on:

#1 no FFL, no desire to get one either. a C&R maybe.
#2 legality in the state of NY, not NYC (big diff.)

I want something i can just buy, own, and occasionally shoot. I don't feel there should be alot of hassle involved (or permit fees) in rifle ownership, so i would like to avoid it. i.e. walk into Wal-mart, buy it, go home.

#3 Condition and maintenance. I am concerned with preservation of self.

Finally, i'd like to find a deal online, but i'm not sure how to tell condition, when a "good deal" isn't... sight-unseen firearms concern me. Also the cosmoline, how do you get it off? I have nobody to teach/show me this stuff... so what do i do? Who do i trust? When it comes to firearms it's a little more important having good info than if you were buying a used camcorder.

It's been a long time since i was around firearms (15-17 years ago) and it never really got *that* technical then, and what i've learned aside from responsible handling, has probably escaped me.

The idea that a bunch of citizens with shotguns and hunting rifles can somehow defend themselves against "the government" is ridiculous.

History has shown the the U.S. government will not hesitate to open fire on it's own citizens, and no individual or nation in the modern world has more firepower than the United States.

I believe anyone should be able to own any amount of any types of guns he wants, but to try to rationalize it by saying it's to protect himself from the government is unrealistic.

cases in point: Ruby Ridge, Waco, etc...
It would'nt matter what you were armed with, you're still toast.

Gonzo, if you are outside NYC then all you need to get one of these rifles is a valid drivers license and clean record. They will or should run a check and register the gun in your name, while you wait. Not too tough to get a rifle. A pistol is a different story, you have to go thru a whole rigamarole for that.

IMHO, the Mini-14 is the best quality of the 3 you mentioned and most expensive, a great rifle. The 10-22 is a great fun rifle and the least expensive rifle and ammo. The SKS is the least fun of the 3 for target shooting. Loud, more kick, not as accurate, more expensive ammo. Like I said, my opinion, others may vary.

There are still some really good .303's around. I have a pair that will definitely shoot & I really like them. They account for everything from deer to ground hogs around here. Gave one to my son when he was about 10. Figured if he dropped it in the creek, he wasn't going to hurt it. Haven't ried the Windex, but that sounds good. Generally, if the ammo is suspect, I throw a few flakes of Tide or something in a container of boiling water, flush barrel, then let the heat dry it & re-oil it with a BoreSnake & Break-Free. Check out the Hanned Line. I bought one of their meplat dies & it transforms FMJ's into good, accurate, humane hunting ammo.
