Tsimi those kinds of pix almost makes my heart bleed.:( There's something about the hollers and bald ridges that live deep in my being.:D

How are those aluminum poles for hiking? I thought about getting one of these but I've seen a lot of people with bent poles in the mountains.

Bruise,

The poles kick ass. Since we were just hiking in our woods we just took one each, but when we are backpacking we each have 2.

I always thought they were stupid, but I had never tried them. I got Ms. Hollowdweller some last year. Suddenly she started beating me uphills. I got a pair and they make going uphill, especially carrying a load about 30% easier for me. We backpack on a lot of rocky places and it takes a lot of energy to balance on the rocks. The poles help you keep your balance. I can see they would bend if you got them caught in something but they are totally worth getting. If you have back or knee problems they really take the weight off your joints.

Bruise I went searching Google for you but didn't find what I was looking for.:( My walking stick is made from a heavy Oklahoma River Cane and is also an ndn Flute and is plenty strong.
I've put all my weight on it when I was 30-40 pounds lighter but wouldn't these days.

If you can find a walking stick made from Calcutta Cane it would probably never break!!!! Calcutta cane has been used for deep sea fishing poles for a good number of years and has stood up very well.
All I could find was a place where you had to order several poles in order to buy them instead of just one.
If you're walking in the woods a steel point is nice to have on your walking stick but if used around town a rubber tip is best as it keeps from sliding on slick surfaces.
Some of the steel tipped poles have a rubber sleeve that can be put over the point for the best of both worlds.:D
Calcutta Cane Rules!!!! :D

Cane? You mean the bamboo like Cane right??

Yup. My walking stick/Flute is made from such.
But the Calcutta Cane is a heavy duty thick walled cane that is super, super, strong!!!!

If you have any bamboo/cane about an inch or inch and a quarter or so in diameter it would work well for walking sticks. It's nice and light too.:D
The closer together the rings are the better for walking sticks for strength.

I mostly used a stick I found on the trail. This past year it seems the maid came in and cleaned up all the good ones, leaving only the bent and rotten ones. :(

Never thought of using bamboo or variant of it. I went and got an oak dowel and some cane tips and will try it out next spring. Never really liked aluminum. :barf:

I figure using two poles would hinder me from eating stuff. :)

Beautiful place. Don't you just love this time of year? I can hear the crunching of the leaves and smell the crisp cold air. You've a little piece of heaven there.

Thanks for sharing. I am semi-seriously considering a move to the woods.

Your hollow is a beautiful place. Noticed the leaves had turned- hope you and family saw a beautiful fall change of colors.

Winter will come- the smell of burning firewood- the promise of cold mornings hunting deer and the sense of the turn of the wheel of the year.

Again, tx for the pix. I remember all these things. I ... never mind. Let me know if there's something similar for sale.

HD,

Last time you gave us a link to a trip, I thikn it was a backpacking trip. You had a picture of yourself for an avatar. Did you not use it on this site? I liked that rifle you were using...

I like the pics of the house, it looks very natural, as if its been there forever. Very homey.

For hiking I use an aluminum hockey stick shaft with a straight wooden extension instead of a blade, it is light but strong, and doubles as a quarterstaff too. But I do intend to try to dual sticks soon, I've heard good things.

Guys, I'm really into backpacking. I've done a lot of research, and the info all says that 'trekking poles' are great. Reduce joint stress and leave you refreshed. And yes, they are specialized products. If you have any questions about backpacking technique or current gear, the best link is Backpacker Magazine:

Enjoy!

That wasn't me. That was Nessmuk. The cat with the switch avatar on Ramanon IS my kitty though.

HD,

Thanks for the pictures. Very evocative.

I like my hiking stick even more on downhills. Its an good brake and takes some of the shock off my old knees. I read a line somewhere about the stick making a shaky biped into a confident triped - quadraped in your case.

Thomas,

I'm heavy so I have trouble with uphills. My pal Kate has trouble with her knees and downhills hurt her more. When we hike with Kate I give her my hiking poles on the downhill and then we trade off again going uphill. Works out pretty well.
