OT Mountain-climber update

I understand, but a sharp knife is going to saw better than a dull one.

How would you characterize a Khukuri cut upon bone? It is not merely smashed, but probably leaves a fine surface. Sure does on wood.

Neither would be in any way effective. Even if the edge was left really coarse so as to maximze its sawing ability, the microteeth would quickly be ground off when cutting bone. I recently had to cut up some seal flippers and tried with a variety of small knives. None could do anything, and the bones were much smaller than a human arm or leg bone.

On a chop a knife can cut bone cleanly, but the sharpness has little effect, geometry and method is much more critical. The greater the speed and overall momentum the cleaner the cut. This of course is no excuse for having a dull knife, the sharpness if critical in many other areas.

Actually, his knife was dull because he attempted to chisel and pry away the rock from around his arm for 2 days before attempting the amputation.

Still a fool for venturing alone / not telling anyone his route.

Cliff, then a sharp knife is useless for severing a limb?
Go for a joint, I guess.

Yes, unless it is heavy enough to chop. Or you have another hand and can use a mallet on the spine.

There are a number of messes that a third hand could have gotten me out of...:D
