OT- My First Edged Tool out of Steel - Pic Heavy

Tod,

That is a very cool experience to learn to make something useful by hand. This was like reading an excerpt from one of the Foxfire series of books on old world skills. I think your axe turned out great, both the metal and wood. Thank you for the great photos and sharing your thoughts on the whole process. Very informative!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It was a ton of fun and to walk away with something that actually works well... that is the icing on the cake!

Looks like a great time! Hit me up next time you're in the back yard!

Will do! They are doing a knife making class in December at the same place. If I go up to visit family for the holidays I might try to get back out there.

Nice work Tod & thanks for sharing the experience with us......when do you plan to start taking orders ?

LOL. I wish I had the equipment needed to do it all over again and make a few on my own. I am used to taking classes where you can go home and try to do what you learned. There are a few things we used that I don't have in my garage.... yet. ;)

Looks like a lot of fun and very well done for the first time! After doing that you can see how it can become addictive.

Yeah, playing with fire and sharp tools... two of my favorite things. Getting to play with fire and make sharp tools.... awesome!!!

Awesome post Tod, thanks for sharing! I've been very interested in attending such a class -- it looks like you had a great time and the knowledge transfer very worth your while! Your bearded (carving?) axe came out awesome -- great job!

Thanks for posting

David, the teacher, had a few axes that he had made where the grind was thinner higher up for a carving axe. If I were to bring my grind higher up it would probably be more like a traditional carving axe. That would be pretty cool and I just might do that later on.

I saw that knifemaking class on their site...wish it wasn't in December but may have to treat myself...
