OT. New addition to the family.

Yvsa:

What are the selling features of a Rattie? My boy wants a dog and at some point I will probably have to cave, but I'd like to avoid the ones that require hauling dog food with a trailer. I have seen some Jack Russell terriers that looked pretty good, but don't know much about Rat Terriers.

Cliff here is -one- good site for Ratties..http://ratbonerescues.com/
If we hadn't of got Ace that was the next option for me. The nice thing is that they will transport a Rattie up to 600 miles by highway using volunteers. You are expected to drive part of the way.:)
And they say they match up personalities as close as possible so the dog you get is probably gonna work well for you.

If you do a Google on Rat Terrier you will get a ton of info including their good and bad points.
They are everything a Jack Russel ain't. JR's are beautiful little dogs, but I wouldn't want one because they need lots of care and attention versus a Rattie.
Ratties have few health issues and a long lifetime usually up to 16 years and 18 years isn't too uncommon.

But here is probably what you're looking for....:D

Thanks!!!! I just noticed your avatar. Your puppy looks similar to a Rattie. May I ask what stock he/she is from?
I can see that look that says, "You want me to what?!?!?!?":D
Just like a Terrier, but then many other dogs have similar trait's.

Clyde is probably (according to me & his vet) part Dalmation, part Pointer, part ????! :D He weighs in at about 42 pounds an is 21" tall at the shoulder. He showed up at work one day... a gaunt, skinny 36 pounds & was rapidly becoming the company mascot. I saw him almost get hit by a truck & knew he'd have a short lifespan. Took him home at the urging of co-workers and he's been here now for about 8 years! He is the 3rd of 4 strays I have given a home to over the years; not to mention 2 Scottish Terriers!;) Hope Ace has a long & loving life.

Yvsa, Congradulations, I have two rescues myself, a little female Keeshond that had been severely abused and an Alaskan Sled Dog [euphanism for wild, pointy eared, furry mutt] which had been neglected. Believe me, it took a while for them to become normal dogs. I actually had to get the male to convince the female I wasn't going to beat her. Our relationship now has evolved into a little love triangle. I adore Ashley, she is so adorable and sweet, Ashley loves Barry [short for wild Barbary Ape] he who is totally fearless, and Barry thinks the sun rises and sets on me. It works out for the three of us. I know you will have years of joy with yours.:)

Yvsa,

Thanks for the info on those Ratties. I may be in the market for one before long.

You're welcome Cliff! I don't think you will be sorry. Actually I think you may wonder how you got along without a dog.:D

CK, I love rescue stories. A rescue -can- be a lot of work sometimes, but many are already well adjusted dogs just needing a good and decent home where they will be loved, spoiled and yet made to behave by positive reinforcement.

Ace has found a basketball in the backyard that we had forgotten was there. It has become his very favorite outside toy. Ace is a delight to watch with his nose under one side of the ball and chasing it around the yard like you wouldn't belive.:D
There's one place he can get a hold of it and carry it and it's dayumed near as big as he is!!!!
Carrie, one of our daughters, came over to do some obedience training and was amazed at what we have already taught Ace.
I've never seen a dog learn as quickly as he does!!!!

Ace has already stolen our hearts but that was pretty much a given from the first time we saw his pic.:D
