So I thought id share some odd but affective ways of sharping some knives. 1 and my favorite is with a simple Bic lighter and the 2nd is on a pair of jeans depending on how dull and damage is done and 3rd is my belt which I have just put compound on and it then is a strop. Anyone else got some neat sharping tricks?

Please explain.

I learned it from another forum and it took a small amount of practice. But I just sharpen the same way I use my strop. The burs and such on the blade will remove some of the plastic and I find the bottom of the lighter is better to smooth these areas before moving to the body of the lighter....I'll try and get a pic of my bic up tomorrow so it's easier to see how it's done.

Bottom of a Coffe cup , this is nothing new but I found it odd when I first heard it , it does work though

Ah ok. So you basically strop on the plastic.

Once I saw a guy roll his car window down half way and used the top edge of the window to sharpen his knife. I tried it when I got home; it works pretty well.

Pretty much! You can actully fell it when it's working and ready. And it worked great on my suscrofa and emerson la griffe but I've used it on a few of my Busse and Kin and spydercos too and it work great! The more you do it the better ya get .

In junior high and high school, my constant carry was a Schrade trapper and I had a reputation for always having a razor sharp blade. (Yes, it was perfectly ok to have at school. My chemistry teacher borrowed it quite a lot.) Of course it was a carbon steel blade and all I did after initial sharpening was to strop it a few times each day on my leather billfold.

Bottom of a worn boot works well for a beater...the grit worked into a worn smooth rubber sole actually gives a knife a decent edge. Definitely not the most ideal or reliable method but it WILL put a working edge back on a user.

if you carry two knives, one a high carbide and hardness(D2 S110v)knife and one softer/simple steel(420hc, 440a) you can repair the soft steel's damaged edge by scrapping the other ones spine along the edge.
Thats why I carry a rough rider along with whatever else I'm carrying.

Inside of an unglazed pot or plant pot, preferably quite a large one. Great for a convex edge. Put a bit of tape on the spine to prevent scratches.

I've done some stropping using a firesteel. Works best when using one from one of my sheaths!!! ;)
